And colleges would not only lose a bargaining chip to coerce disenfranchised youth to play at their school, but also a "reason" as to why they can't just simply pay their athletes.

With NIL they are just simply paying their athletes now. Sure not every single D3 or D2 school and sport is getting big money but major D1 athletes in big time stuff is living quite well these days and lets be real those guys were never there to graduate in the first place so they never cared about the scholarship. It was exposure for getting them to the NFL or NBA.

College/university sports being a big thing is an extremely American phenomenon that you're gonna have to try hard to find most anywhere else.

Even in places where it isnt free, most scholarships are academic, not sport based.

Colleges make far more money off their sports stars than they pay in scholarships

My dude, athletic scholarships are not the carrot in the "carrot and stick" of US collegiate bullshit.

They're a big incentive, yeah.

But the real underlying reason is needing the GI Bill to be the carrot so poor people will sign up for the military.

Two things can be true at one time, you know.

And by your own admission, it is a carrot on a stick for colleges.

The baby carrot to the GMO Orange Watermelon Monstrosity that is the GI Bill, sure.

But we're talking two populations where one is SUBSTANTIALLY larger, and the smaller group largely benefits only the college while the larger one is being used for profit by the actual government.

Clubs have their own academies where they teach kids to play. There are also independent youth development academies affiliated with the professional clubs.
