Habs is just the nickname for Montreals hockey team, the Canadians.

Quebec being Quebec.

That Notwithstanding clause needs to go, it's getting dangerous.

They want businesses to come but not too many businesses.

For anyone who doesn't want to read the article, the issue is that "Go" is an English word.

Quebec is kinda stupid that way.

Vancouver had this last year too. Seems a little petty.

I used to play on a wow server back in classic that I was unaware had been selected as the "unofficial quebecois" server. It was awful.

I think they said GO TEAM GO because not everyone in Vancouver necessarily supports the Canucks.

Friendly reminder, Quebec is the place that specifically mandates that stop signs couldn't be in English even though stop signs are in English even in freaking France.

Literally France was all, "yeah, STOP is fine," and Quebec insists that ARRET is needed instead.

I think it is great that Quebec retains their French heritage, and it is therefore a super fun place to visit, but they do go too far sometimes. Like this time. Admittedly ridiculous.

The lengths that the people in charge of Quebec are willing to go to to essentially destroy the province just to "preserve" French are absolutely insane, and it's even crazier that people are still just standing by and supporting them.

Like keep in mind that one of their proposed language law requirements (and they've only held off on implementing this one specifically, not outright decided to get rid of it) is that things like stoves, dishwashers, washing machines/dryers, TVs, etc, MUST have the dials/settings/etc on them labeled in French to be able to be sold in Quebec.

Literally no company would ever abide by that if it was implemented. It'd basically become impossible for anyone in Quebec to buy a major appliance.

They've legitimately gone from "retaining French heritage" to trying to wipe out all English from the province.

That's a pretty extreme take. Quebec just goes overboard with wanting an insane number of protections.

Heck, one of my friends is a -eaux Cajun with a great swamp drawl, and dude is delightful bilingually.

I don't know the details, but was responding to a post that was clearly a shit take. I did say they go too far, but I admittedly don't know the extent.

I do know that when I was there a couple years ago, it was very easy to get by without speaking French. I would always greet people in French (to be polite) but then the vast majority switched to English because they could tell French was not my first language.

Eh I think it depends on what interactions you've had with french canadians. I'd imagine most are just normal people... but the interactions I remember are the ones I had with people who thought they were better than english speakers and refused to speak english despite being fluent in it just for the sake of being difficult.

Are there still a lot of Anglo-Canadians in Quebec? And if so, how difficult is it for them! Or do they still know French just because they were made to learn it?
