I remember oh, around 2005 or so that Boris Johnson was the darling of the panel show. He was everyone's favourite buffoon. Just a harmless clown who said funny things on talk shows. Except he wasn't harmless at all, and he wasn't a buffoon either.

We're seeing it again with Farage. He was on all the panel shows, people like that he drinks a pint with a cigarette. I really thought Brexit had exposed him but here we are again, it's like everyone has amnesia.

I mean, yes he irredeemably fucked the country with the biggest act of unforced self-harm in generations, but then he went on I'm A Celeb and ate some yucky stuff, so that makes him a-okay as far as the public are concerned.

I remain glad that I left.

The Conservative party self-destructed. All the ex-Tory voters are flocking to Reform. The Labour Party isn't that popular with... anyone right now.

We can only hope that Reform will do such a shit job managing their local councils that when it comes time for the general election, voters will have come to their senses. The question is - what do the Conservatives do to win back their voters? They can't out-Farage Farage.

The Labour Party does not have faith that they can win on a left wing agenda. They spend most of their time trying to convince the middle classes that they are 'fiscally responsible', love business, and would never even think of raising taxes. Which is especially funny, as all parties raise taxes (even if they pretend they don't).

Traditional working class Labour voters (the ones who voted for Boris and Brexit), all love the NHS, the Welfare State, and Trade Unions. But they hate immigrants and trans people.

Meanwhile, the middle classes are a little bit more socially progressive, but they fret about the value of their homes and whether they can afford private schooling for their kids.

Both Labour and the Tories have been an absolute disaster for a long time. At least since the 2008 crash and the introduction of austerity (which was never really reversed). Voting third party reflects disillusionment, and the fact that a barely engaged population is being sold the old lie: if only we can keep the foreigners out, life will get better.

Their miserable because they aren't being paid enough to cover increased costs of living and their tax dollars are not being spent in efficient ways that most benefit them. Instead of directing that anger towards their employers and representatives who are asleep at the wheel, they listen to propaganda that the reason their lives suck is due to immigration and trans people getting a tiny bit of help from social programs. So now they want all foreigners gone and for the elimination of all public spending that they think doesn't directly and immediately benefit them.

The depressingly ironic part is that there will be an inevitable migrant crisis all sides will need to face due to climate change making parts of the world uninhabitable, but that's still a few decades away.

I'm pretty sure this all comes down to the simple problem of wealth inequality, and how the rich has successfully waged a campaign to convince us that the problem is literally anything other than taxing wealth.

We're all getting poorer and struggling more and more because of immigrants, and trans people, and dole bludgers...surely it's these things

Sounds like both sides of the pond have the same problems. Too bad the stupid people outnumber those who can even just halfway see what's really going on. You need a strong left that believes in something, fights for it, and has a narrative that anyone can understand and propagate. If you don't, you will always leave a lane WIDE open for conservatism at best and fascism at worst. Complacent half-conservatism isn't going to save anyone.

Except the bad party isn't quite as horrible as MAGA, and the evidence for the good party doing the bare minimum is vanishingly small. And they don't even have the 'difficult to pass' excuse.

Things have been getting worse under both parties for some time now. British people tend to be more cynical and believe in nothing.
