Yet another CEperson going to Japan.

I feel lucky though because I am going with the dream travel companion; someone who is a low key planner who always manages to nail the right amount of planned activities and adhoc "I know a restaurant here" stuff, as well as being half japanese and a seasoned pro at doing the nippon thing

Stoked about it.

Japan is just a magical place. I was so happy to go to see an owarai show at The Lumine when I went to Tokyo last week. I want to go back and see more.

I am trying to make it a thing for myself to collect IC cards. I like them. So far, I have Suica, PASMO, Kitaca, ICOCA, and Sapica. I'll have to head to the islands next time I go.

They were all cool with me. As long as you learn the etiquette and attempt to do it correctly (aka dont be some obnoxious American), they're pretty friendly. I talked to dozens of them with no problems and even made a pen pal >_>

To be fair you should be respectful regardless of where you're visiting. Plus I'm sure every country has parts of it that're not particularly friendly to foreigners.

They sure do.

In my experience, China and Thailand are both considerably worse for anti-foreigner sentiment than Japan.

I've heard Japan loves foreigners as visitors but once you say you plan to live there, a switch gets turned on and they get not-so-friendly. >_>

I know a fair few foreigners who either currently live in Japan or have lived there before and none of them seemed to have that problem.

What kind of foreigners? I feel like it depends on where they're from when it comes to how cool they might be with it...yeah, I'm talking about race/ethnicity too. :\

A mix, though the majority are white Brits, Americans, Irish, Aussies and South Africans. There are some black people among them (Two Americans and one South African). Also a Vietnamese guy.

The black guys would get people looking at them a lot because theyre not used to seeing them, but they likened it to how everybody looks at me in Vietnam for being tall because the average height is smaller here.

I was surprised just how untrue this was.

Several times I got lost trying to find my way around, or work out the trains, and people came up to me to ask if they could help, which I wasn't expecting at all.

I saw very small amounts of anti-foreigner sentiment when I was there a few months ago. but basically all in the form of restaurants upcharging or there was 1 that forbid foreigners entirely

as long as you're not being an idiot there's no worry at all really

I mean, if the worst thing about going to Japan is that the locals don't think you're such hot shit . . .

I'd take that over the risk of getting shot in the street, or imprisoned at the border.

well yeah but I would not travel at all to a country where I was worried about that sort of thing <_<

the one thing I am kind of curious about is if the frequency of visual aids in restaurants (plastic models of food in the entrance, pictures in menus) is a foreigner-friendly thing specifically or if it's just sort of part of the culture

Just visting Tokyo or going for the full package of city hopping to gain the full Japanese experience ?

Most casuals just visit either Tokyo, Osaka or Kyoto and just call it a day when Japan is much more.

some outside the norm places I've been to:

- shirakawa-go (fantastic if you're a big higurashi fan)
- kaga-onsen (kinda depressed area with not much going on, only went there for the rabbit village: Tsukiusagi no Sato https://g.co/kgs/ty3B2tr)
- ikaho-onsen (didn't spend enough time there, only got to see the initial d manhole covers: https://en.japantravel.com/gunma/ikaho-s-initial-d-manhole-covers/66108)

Guess where my Chinese family members got slurs yelled at them and told to get out of the country (it was not Japan).

Pretty much every significant restaurant has the model food, it has nothing to do with foreigner friendly (I live in the middle of nowhere with almost no foreigners and you still see it). Places in major cities will have English language menus though.

They had the model food 20+ years ago when I went and there were significantly fewer foreigners then.

A little over a month until I go again. I cant wait. Things are so different plus now I am bringing my teens and husband.
