I think I'm mostly drawn to limited because it's much more of a level playing field compared to standard based on how low my card pool is.

I've been able to make a few standard decks but it does get old playing the same few decks every game.

So I'm mostly just playing for fun but there's added stress to do well because if I win enough I can continue playing and having fun. Saving up all week and then going 0-3 makes me want to pull my hair out.

Limited is one of the best formats to play. It's annoying to play on Arena if you don't want to do the latest set though.

I think it's a bit of a catch-22 with in person vs arena drafting/sealed. One of the outs you have for physical limited is, if you pull a cool and/or valuable card, then even if you go 0-3 you still have something to hang your hat on and feel good about. Maybe the card can even have paid for your draft if you just sell it.

On the other hand, you aren't paying real money to do arena, but that same silver lining doesn't exist because every card is so much more accessible on arena than IRL because you don't have to pay for it, so it feels imo worse to go 0-3 in arena because IRL you're investing both time and money, and can end up *just* losing your time, whereas in arena all you're investing is time, so you lost everything you invested, and the only way to guarantee you have the means to try again is performance, compared to possibly pulling a good card to pay for your physical limited event.

Of course, if you go 0-3 in a physical event and don't get jack, then that def feels the worst of anything. There's pitfalls no matter what you do.

I, a fool, saw a ton of great rares for Red-White equipment and thought "THIS time it'll work, right?"

It did not. One of the swiftest 0-2s of my life.

Boo, that sucks! I had a draft token leftover somehow and I thought I picked a pretty good R/U deck but I got obliterated 0-3.

Just ran into Dinosaur revive deck that dropped about 40/40 power onto the board on turn 3.

I like Magic but holy shit there is a lot of dumb stuff in this game.

I've def ran into that too, in standard. It's a lot of reanimation on...I think ghalta? That lets you just dump your entire hand or something like that. And things like trumpeting carnosaur and vaulborn tyrant, it's just a ton of big stuff with reanimation. But it's not the valgavoth variety where they cheat out val/atraxa, etc

Yeah a lot of decks in Standard are using reanimate to mana cheat crazy cards out early right now. So I'm running into a lot of Ghost Vacuum and graveyard removal cards.

It's affecting my deck because I'm running a BW Sephiroth deck that uses Gorehound to pack my graveyard and then Raise the Past to bring everything back to sacrifice.

There's a card that completely exiles my graveyard which is an auto loss. And there are a few enchantments that exile things if they were to go into a graveyard which is also an auto loss.

Maybe time to switch to my mono white life gain deck which doesn't depend on the graveyard.

Triska was more because I liked the design rather than it fitting that deck

I was trying to limit myself to sub $1 cards with just a few scattered in at $1-3. Mainly because I still don't know what I'm doing

It feels so damn good seeing you guys all get super excited about Magic. Seriously, it's a small candle of joy in the frigid darkness that is 2025.

I think I'm running into a similar realization the last time I got into Magic that arena is just really tough to enjoy as a new player. Feels like I'm beating my head against the wall with these crazy decks in Standard and I can only build 2 or 3 decks that are basically the same.

Limited is so much more fun than Standard but I'm only allowed to play that mode once or twice a week.

With how fast these new sets are coming too I'm not sure I want to commit $60 every two months to actually keep up with a Standard collection.

Maybe my perception is skewed because these cheap new player decks are all aggro but I can pretty much tell if a game is going to be a win/loss within the first few turns.

I bought a Gift Bundle and opened up the worst collector booster ever. Best card was a foil alt art Masaume. Everything else was like a dollar or less.

That said I did open an alt art Vivi in the last play booster, which was nice, but definitely didn't recoup the price of the bundle.

where are you finding gift bundles

If you don't want to play standard you can always stick to the precon mode if you want, p sure there is a mode only for people who are using the decks the game gives you.

I'm in Canada so I don't think that helps you. A bunch of stores have them but they're scalped to hell, even by the local card shops. I found a store online that sold it at an arguably reasonable price, but it was still expensive.

Yeah I have played a bunch of that too and I do my dailies sometimes there.

My wife just won a game playing the Bumbleflower precon via Triskaidekaphile she played at the very beginning of the game that everyone just forgot about because everyone was generating crazy tokens whenever people were drawing

I did not have as much luck as my wife. I was playing a fun Neera deck but it seemed everyone was playing significantly higher powered decks than me so I just had no answers to basically anything

Next week I'm gonna take a Vivi deck or something and ask before we start how strong the decks they are playing

Yeah it was just a weird dynamic. Played with the same group a few times and there's no discussion of deck strength before games and everyone decks has varied massively in strength between all our sessions.

I'm not familiar with the card names yet but someone last night had a zombie deck where they flooded the field with zombies and then had another card that gave them 50% of their zombie total again each turn. This came with a board wipe beforehand that generated zombies. A game before a guy had a commander that generated a token every time someone drew a card which spiralled very quickly since multiple people had stuff causing and reliant on card draw

Played my Cloud precon deck for the first time tonight. I had to have drawn terribly because that deck seemed so ass. Like there was just no damage and after I lost I started seeing how long until I would have drawn any card that could have dealt more damage and it was like 20 turns.

The commander deck or the starter deck? I played a four person game with all the commander precons and FFVII one goes off pretty hard once you get a couple equipment out.

Sure but then they are tapped out after the phase ends. Its more of a denial card than actually trying to get mana

After way too much of my weekend, here we are. Now maybe I'll actually play with these things.

I didn't catalog all the old commons and stuff, just anything I thought might be valuable and/or fit into a deck.

I went 0-3 in the first sealed of EoE.

I went WG and lost to other WG decks that actually had the bombs I was missing.

Don't plan on playing the game or even collecting too many but planning to grab a few booster packs here and there. My brother bought a pre release box and I pulled the Sephiroth OWA full art. Liked the Quina art card and Seifer card (the elbow one not the shoulder one). The pre-release card was the Father to Son card which was a little disappointing value wise but still a cool card. Also the FF1 box was cool and a nice surprise.

I only bought like 3 booster packs since it launched and got what I wanted

Finally got enough gems to do another sealed run and went 0-3 again. My card pool was so bad but I also got landlocked in 2/3 losses.

Maybe I should just ditch sealed and stick to draft.

I made my Red XIII commander deck finally! Was really struggling if I wanted to go equipment and aura fun stuff but the builds just werent looking interesting enough to make it worth it. Went for 1/1 counter modified creature shenanigans and it is definitely strong, so Im pleased with that.

Last night was a mixed bag. Went 0/3 with 2 of the games basically being a waste of time (for me) but the third game was fun.

Game 1 I got dropped into a game the second I walked through the door by a friend from our large group chat who I had talked to a lot but hadn't played yet. I guess he had been wanting to play with me for a while. He was playing Sisay Weatherlight Captain that was either Bracket 4/5 nonsense or he just absolutely drew the nuts. Although after he got her down he was basically just playing straight from his deck and had ridiculous amounts of mana. I was playing bracket 2 jank.

Game 2 was a little fairer. He was playing Obosh combined with some card he had to tap to half everyone's life. My deck could have actually worked with that (I was playing Evereth) except I got mana screwed (started with 2, didn't draw a 3rd until turn 6/7 ish). So I just wasn't able to pump up Evereth to blow her up.

Game 3 I decided fuck it and played my Neera Wild Mage deck which is basically a fun chaos deck. Every game I've played with her people have basically gone 'Wait what and then laughed at what she does'. I ramped hard at game start so was really able to get going. We got to an endgame board state and I knew I wouldn't get another turn so I just threw down Warp World as a hail mary which nobody countered. I did get a wincon from it but it was immediately removed from someone else's ETB. But it was still a fun end to game because everyone just suddenly had a massive board with none of it planned.
