i'd say they're fun if you have a group of people to play with.

other than that, IMO they are just very okay

I love 1 and 2 solo. 1 kinda has a nice turn your brain off and go sorta thing in my opinion. 2 is a lot more involved and still fun.

Also I'm in the apparent minority on the internet but I genuinely enjoy the writing and characters in the games.

Depends on how into a Diablo style looter through the lens of an FPS you'd be.

The gameplay loop can be really addicting if you're into that kind of thing and and like, working towards a particular build or whatever.

Imo yes. I have played through them all solo.

1 might feel a little rough around the edges at this point but it had a good variety of classes.

2 only had a couple classes that really spoke to me. It was otherwise a positive improvement to the formula, but it was pretty painful as a solo player because of both the length of the story and the size of the maps - navigating/fighting through everything just took forever.

The Pre-Sequel was fun, much more manageable as a solo player, still didn't have a good variety of characters (for my taste anyway), the oxygen mechanic was a good addition but they didn't really... add much otherwise.

Tales from the Borderlands is a fun CYOA game from Telltale Games. Totally different genre but it does have some very important story moments that are crucial for fully enjoying 3 imo.

3 has the best selection of characters, the best gunplay (shots and explosions feel like they have weight), a really beautiful variety of environments to enjoy with very surreal and grand structures and features. And even despite the size of everything it was more manageable as a solo player than 2 because of how the enemies are situated around the map. Story is pretty weak and repetitive at times but the gameplay more than makes up for it.

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is *really* fun, I love the new mechanics, the writing is fun and dorky, and it's pretty approachable as a solo player. There's a lot to it and a lot of DND / RPG tropes that they poke fun at. The biggest detractor is the expansion packs utterly SUCK. Expansion packs for previous Borderlands games tend to be full on side stories. Here it was just a series of short raids that have increasingly tough enemies and increasingly complex boss encounters. I hated them. Otherwise fun game though.

I did not play Tales 2 so no comment.

Tiny Tinas is currently free on epicgames. I don't know if it's the best place to start, but....freeeeee. lol.

Oh shit yeah good call.

I *think* it would be fine to start with? Tiny Tina is a recurring character in the series but I think it's enough to know she's hyper and likes explosions and magical stuff.

Well, you would be taking a step back going from there to earlier games with less equipment, only one active ability per class, etc.

If you can find the Handsome Collection when it goes on sale for like $10-$15 that's one of the best values in gaming out there, assuming you're remotely interested in the concept of a loot-based shooter.

1 was great but might be a little dated. 2 is absolutely fucking amazing. Most people said The Pre-Sequel was kinda weak or didn't like it, but I still enjoyed it a lot. I'd obviously still put 2 above it though. I was highly disappointed in 3. Wasn't interested in that Tiny Tina spinoff. Or the Tales game.

I keep getting offers for the Pandora's Box edition for, like, thirty bucks.

And that one's got 1/2/3, all their DLCs, the Pre-Sequel, and the Tales games.

But with how Randy Pitchfork has been talking, I'd recommend buying Borderlands used.

Yes. Because, as far as gameplay goes, they are the best looter shooter games on the market by a wide margin. The story, though, has gotten progressively worse each game, and they have made the annoying decision to make multiple playthroughs mandatory in order to reach max level.

I never got the sense that you have to do multiple playthroughs to hit max level unless you are just speed running the story. Hell with TTWL I hit max level well before the end, same with 3.

3 was easier to max, 2 was a bit more complicated.

Then 2's Overlord levels were much worse than 3's Mayhem system, even if I usually just stuck with M11.

Borderlands 3 is the first game that they changed it. Mayhem mode allows enemies to scale to your level.

But before that, each playthrough had a level cap. In the first Borderlands, you weren't reaching the cap without doing a "playthrough 2 run" and Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: the Pre-Sequel each needed 3 playthroughs. Once on normal to unlock True Vault Hunter mode. Then, beating True Vault Hunter mode unlocked Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode, and UVHM was the playthrough where you could finally hit max level.

And of course, my other gripe is that this is all per character. I really hope that Borderlands 4 takes a Diablo approach. Beat the story once, and then every character on that account after that can jump straight into the post game and grind.

Same tbh. I liked to just zone out and go through the campaign and the massive dlc 2 had. Playing with other people was too frantic. People just blitz through. I prefer to explore and find hidden areas/chests, easter eggs, and take it all in.

Yeah same. I feel like I'm pretty forgiving on 'cringy' writing but 3 was a bit much even for me. I still haven't gotten around to the DLC even though one stars like on of my favorite characters in the series (I super enjoy Cherami Leigh as Gaige)

I played the DLCs recently for the first time and they're way better than the main game in terms of writing. Gaige's in particular is pretty fun.

That Lovecraftian DLC with Gaige is probably the one I've played the most out of BL3's stuff. Every now and then though you'll encounter someone thoroughly confused by that side quest involving cilantro.

I dunno how people can hate 1 or 2. They both have really solid gameplay, especially the remaster of 1. Two has some annoying sections on the 2nd playthrough, and having to use slag on the 3rd play sucks. That's one of the reasons I liked TPS, no slag required. 3 was alright on the first play: the gameplay is good, and I didn't even hate the dialogue or the twins or big spoiler Ava because of Maya dying.

My biggest problem with 3 was that the UI on PC felt like an awful console port.

It helps to use a Maliwan sniper with either a matching barrel or grip, even if it is white rarity. Maliwan means high proc chance, sniper rifle means high proc chance, a matching Maliwan barrel or grip will boost the proc chance, and since the projectile explodes you get 2 chances to proc per shot.

TPS didn't have Slag, but Cryo definitely helped to completely shut down the Ascended.
