They won't abandon them completely but in an attempt to shake off their image of being "too woke" they're going to be a lot less vocal about it while allowing things like this to fall through the cracks, primarily because they want to follow what the polls show. It's a pattern of Democrats to shy away from issues when they feel it's advantageous to do so, while simultaneously giving the impression that this is a temporary "one step forwards, two steps back" situation that will be remedied as soon as they have a supermajority. It's logical but it really doesn't instill much confidence that Democrats can be trusted to keep to any principles or values, not just with issues like trans rights but everything from economic policy to immigration. Point is, Democrats want to gain favor and the polls they adhere to say the majority of people don't like trans athletes. They're willing to concede on this in order to win, and if anybody has issue with that they need to shut up and keep quiet or else the Republicans will win, and maybe they shouldn't rely on that kind of strategy.
