generic to the core, with some flashy fights. I wasnt super big on the soundtrack (the biggest draw), but there were def some tracks that sounded like it came straight outta Xenoblade Chronicles X (same composer)

It's a generic, nothing show carried entirely by the budget being put into the fight scenes.

Most anime is trash, so I guess if you're going to make trash, it may as well be flashy, well-animated trash, though the second season was wearing a bit thin for me by the end. It's hard to maintain long-term interest when a show has next to no substance, no real stakes, and no actual character development outside of maybe the first episode or two.

Most live action shows (and movies) are absolutely trash. Overwhelmingly so.

I watch plenty of anime, and even enjoy some of it, but most anime (and live action tv and movies, to be clear) is analogous to junk food. Enjoy it if you want, but let's not pretend it's more than it is.

I find that the more I watch these type of power fantasy anime, I care more about the world building than the MC himself. Like with Solo Leveling, I'm really curious about the stuff that's been going on behind the scenes. Like (major season 2 spoilers!), why is his dad so strong, but seemingly unknown to the top hunters? Who were those guys that showed up at the end on ant island? Why have some monsters been able to talk and what blocks them from divulging certain info? And what exactly gave the MC his powers to begin with?

It's fun for what it is, but it's definitely not well written at all. There are so many illogical things done for rule of cool. The funniest thing is the anime is actually an improvement on the web comic because they at least try to have the side characters more active in the background. Not sure how it is compared to the web novel. The quality drops off after the point where the anime is at, so I'm curious if they'll be able to do anything to improve it. The ending is trash, so I don't think they'll be able to do anything to salvage that.

It has less to do with the saturation, it's to do with it just being paper thin and pure slop. What is the premise? That magical gates everywhere and monsters can pour out if they aren't beaten + people have gotten superpowers. How has society adapted? They haven't beyond making guilds for people with superpowers. What is the goal of everyone? To 9-5 doing gates for money. Why is it profitable to do gates? Because you get things that will let you do harder gates. At any point does the premise ever just stop being "hurr durr, punch things"? No, at no point does it ever evolve from characters doing things purely to have an RPG in comic/cartoon form.

And that's purely just the premise. It can easily be moved onto the characters, the art (though that would actually start going into getting it compared to other LitRPGs and how they are all the same visually), etc. Literally nothing about it beyond being peoples' first is particularly noteworthy (and I mean that people saw it first as it was nowhere near the forefront of the genre) as far as anything beyond the animation is concerned. It is purely a vessel for watching a "zero to hero" story in which the MC is almost immediately catapulted up to the top and afterwards gets to show just how cool and awesome he is to the world: the very concept of what defines the LitRPG slop stream that has been bubbling over for about a decade now.

You can easily find fanfics better than this.

I mean yeah the plot is kinda generic but I just see the series as a vehicle for the animators to make some badass fight scenes. I dont think the show pretends to be any deeper than it is. Its just a power fantasy and theres nothing wrong with that

Anyone is allowed to like anything. Heck, I liked Bofuri (for something already mentioned) despite it being hot trash (Oh boy, weaponized narcolepsy power!~). I'm just pointing out that the reason people don't like it isn't because of fatigue, but because it's just shit. I'm not saying that you are bad for liking it, I am merely saying it like it is.

Yeah I just never enjoyed any of these self-insert power fantasies. I have a friend from China who is super into them and he basically always likes whoever the most OP character is in a work. I just can't get into it myself. But he liked this and also really likes Overlord (which I saw some of and also had to drop because I just don't like OP main characters who everyone wants to sleep with).

Both the webnovel and manhwa were both really popular as well, and I remember liking them both. I think it's good, but it's a little archaic compared to when the webnovel first released. However, it was an insanely easy read, which made it pretty fun.

There's tons of better things out there, but as a gateway anime, it's fitting.

Even then, fatigue is a byproduct more than anything else. Especially when Solo Leveling is one of the first Gate ones to get a cartoon. If it was well written or had anything interesting going on then most people wouldn't particularly make near the stink on it (just look at how hard a gimmick carried Spider). There are shows that are not even trying to be different than every season prior but they still get some love because something about them resonates, fatigue just isn't considered the relevant thing for them because people will articulate reasons for them.

I see people still think they're cool hating on it for no reason.

It got attention because the manhwa had amazing art. Not everything needs to be a complex story, there is space for some simple stuff like this with cool fights.

I love solo leveling. Voted for it on the crunchyroll anime of the year. Very glad it won

I ain't going to pretend that I read the manwha for anything more than cool fight scenes drawn great, the plot is pretty shit. Can't wait for the anime to adapt the Architect, Frost, Beast, and Plague Monarch, and Thomas Andre fights.

Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint is the one with the sauce though, I'd be real fine with an adaptation of that.

I hope you realized that you basically just voted for Season 1 and not 2.

I read the webtoon years ago, and while I thought it was entertaining overall, I couldn't tell you much of its plot.

tbh it's the kind of series where even the concept makes it really hard to have much substance. Like from the concept of the series it basically makes it so the side cast doesn't even have a chance of mattering even on a character level

I always considered it a type of Urban Fantasy.

I think reverse isekai is also used.

They're considered "Portal Fantasy" or "Gate to another world" - first popularized by the anime "Gate" (thus the term)

I know it's part of the broader portal fantasy / isekai genre. I'm looking for a specific isekai subgenre pertaining to monsters invading the real world via a portal or rift. Koreans actually have a name for this subgenre but I can't find it.

Which makes it all the more tragic after the artist died sometime ago.

I read the chapter but most manhwas for me tends to get boring fast, and I can't really get around the scrolling style than just using pages like manga/comic book.
