My brain is synched to PS/Xbox controller layouts.

It's the real way, Sony changed it for western audiencies for no reason and Microsoft is just dumb like that

Yeah, it always takes me several minutes to adjust when I switch between my Xbox controller and Switch Pro controller lol

Microsoft straight up shouldn't have used the same letter combination as Nintendo just placed in different spots.

Logically it makes sense. On an NES controller the A button took precedent.

Microsoft was just going with the Saturn/Dreamcast scheme. There was this assumption during the Xbox's R&D that Sega would play a huge role. There were even some talks about the Xbox being backwards compatible with Dreamcast games.

Both of these.

It's has never been an issue for me. It's like muscle memory the moment I pick up a Nintendo product.

Even my 4 year old daughter who regularly alternates between the Xbox and the Switch doesn't seem to have an issue.

Just because Nintendo did it first doesn't mean their system makes any sense.

I just consider it part of my learning curve for a new game. But yes. Sony switched it for North America.

I figure it is good for the brain to learn a new layout and that I am keeping my brain flexible.

I do handheld emulator things (think Anbernic or Retroid) for buddies who want one. You have the option to make the bottom button confirm and the right button cancel (western style) or bottom as cancel and right as confirm (japanese style). Every single time my buddies say they want it Japanese style. I swear I'm the only person who likes Western.

I'm the opposite cuz I grew up with Nintendo SNES. Xbox is the one fucking it up for me >_>

Turbograftx 16 buttons always confused me.
You either press run to do something in the menu or you pressed 1 or 2

I always felt like it "up to the developer" to determine what button was gonna be the button to be the confirmation button on that console.

The way I remember it is, Nintendo is a Japanese company, Japanese is read from right to left. Microsoft is an American company, Americans read from left to right.

Neither does anyone else's. But they're not required to. The only objective is to be clear, and choosing an existing convention to intentionally kerskuffle is the single fastest way to fail that objective.

I'm glad the Steam Deck has an option to swap the functions of ABXY to at least match the placement of Nintendo

Japanese is only read right to left when written vertically, horizontally (as in how it would be typically presented in a video game) is left to right

not to mention, you wouldn't read the text on a Super Famicom controller right to left either

Still seems like a handy rule of thumb though.

It's the other way around for me. It was originally A on the right and fucking xbox changed it on purpose and also used the same letters.

It's more annoying when games only adjust for xbox controllers, when my switch pro functions more practically most of the time.

To think about all those wasted years and pets peeved

I get confused when using X and Y because I can figure out A and B easily between Switch and Xbox but it's always the X and Y that confuses me. Mostly on Microsoft product. Especially with rhythm games.
