A game where you like, mute it, or turn the volume way down, and zone out playing it while listening to some long-form audio entertainment. Like a podcast, documentary, youtube video, music whatever. Zen mode.

I like me some RPGs and grinding in some of them - even when not necessary, because numbers go up. Final Fantasy X, Suikoden 2 hunting for rare drops, Dragon Quest games. No story advancement, just me and experience points, money, and items. While I listen to the top 10 best competitive moves in gen 1 pokemon (or whatever).

What's your favorite podcast games?

I did this with Surviving Mars, but that's all that comes to mind.

The last couple of MGS games had a built-in music player, which was kinda nice.

I have tried to do this and just cant. I need in game audio even when its very plain. The closest I can come is my farming simulator game I can turn on some external music and listen to that while simultaneously listening to game sounds but I cant turn it down and definitely wont mute it. I still need to hear the tractors and machinery working and making my floor vibrate from the subwoofer and the room shake when the tractor hits the right frequency. Especially the combines.

Any turn based rpg is good for that. While you're out grinding for levels or rare drops, just turn on a show while you go through the motions. I've gone shiny hunting in Pokeymans SV while listening to other stuff. Also mindlessly wandering Tears of the Kingdom in search of Korok seeds. I'll never find them all, but it's something to do while listening to people talk.

I have to say I've never done this, not even once.

To me, the audio of the game is a quintessential part of the experience. Any other sound, or even no sound, just feels wrong to the extreme. Can't bear with it.

The closest thing I've done would be setting up the game so it would be grinding/farming stuff without further input, or at least with only requiring blindly mashing a single button non-stop, then watching or browsing something else while the game runs on its own, but then I'm not actually 'playing' the game myself, am I?

There is this dude named tyrannicon that would stream various games. Sometimes he is playing a souls-like game, and sometimes its something from the retro era of gaming.

His voice absolutely cracks me up when he rages (also when he adds the oldschool castlevania death music to his deaths. It just gets me) and so there is times where I would put one of his stream compilations on in the background if I am doing something.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXY-6WeJQWo

If I am putting on something non-ragey then I enjoy listening to people go through rpgs (as long as they aren't too terrible. Even listening in has my limits) or old 2D action games.

WoW is incredible for this.

More generally, open world games are also good. Something like Horizon or Cyberpunk where you run around just clearing out stuff on the map.
