Adding on to how Ulti didn't really get Matthew's popularity, that's what I think about Marisa. Absolutely baffling to me that she's this popular.

1 second from disaster.

Stoic female swordsman is a pretty well-trodden trope that's surprisingly sparse in Fire Emblem. Marisa is probably the most accessible when your competition either joins late (Karla, Say'ri) or is from a lesser played game (Ayra) so it's not too surprising she stands out despite not being an amazing unit.

Whilst we're on the topic of explaining popularity though - Jill is the one I shrug at. I kind of hope the reason isn't as basic as I think but I suspect it is.

There's a bunch of characters left here just because people are down bad for them. I don't think Jill is one of them.

the "basic" reason would be just a strong unit. best unit in PoR and the savior of the shit squad in RD.

I thought the reason people liked Jill was her backstory and supports.

Jill is pretty powerful flyer in Radiant Dawn, like Haar, who's also still in, but a little worse.

When I played FE8, Marisa was quite low level by the time I got her, so I never really used her. This was in Eirika's route - dunno if she's better on the other route.

she's even worse in the other route. arguably the worst unit in the game.

Marisa isn't any better on Ephraim's route, because there's no fixing a myrmidon who joins with worse stats than the myrmidon you've had for a while by that point.

Marisa is a fun, socially awkward myrmidon with a good design.

Jill is just all around great and one of the best Fire Emblem characters period.

Interesting that she's not that good there either. Joshua was also great at getting strength levels that run, so yeah I used him the whole game.

than anything to do with her design. I just don't think her "I learned racism was wrong" arc lands as much with me and doesn't deserve to be placed on a pedestal of great backstory and character development. No more than other characters that receive scorn for it anyway.

If Haar was a mage he would not be as popular as he is.

At least for me personally, that's a huge disagree. Haar could be any class and he'd still be my favorite character. He's a must for the Tower if only for the boss conversations with all the senators and Levail/Sephiran. Each one a banger of a conversation. The ending to Haar's convo with Levail lives rent free in my mind tbh.

The racism backstory to Jill is fine, but I also like that the Camus of POR is also her father and that she can be recruited against you. That's real good.
