Snowball Fight #2 - Faris Scherwiz

The crime scene investigators had barely finished cleaning up the blood from Lenne's untimely passing, when Ritz noticed a woman whose hair kept changing colours in the results of google image searches appeared in front of her. "Someone who has naturally pink hair 23.6% of the time? They must be eliminated.", she thought to herself.

She leaned down and collected some snow off the ground, compacting it into a ball while pondering why she was doing this. Was it for money? Was it for glory? No. Neither. It was because smfffc chat said her memestocks might rise if she keeps killing people. And also because it was now canonically in her nature.

"Hey! Lady!" she shouted as she did not know this variable-haired woman's name - and as the lady turned around, Ritz lobbed the snowball at her. This time, however, Ritz knew that a rock might not be enough, because her target didn't look like she had just returned from a Shania Twain concert. The embedded shards of glass pierced the woman's neck, and she clutched her throat, falling to the ground. "Oh crackers..." she mumbled as she fell to the floor.

An adrenaline rush surged through Ritz as police sirens blared nearby - but she did not run, as the police were headed to a nearby hostage situation, where one of Lopen's next-round saves was being held. She knew she was safe. She had gotten away with it. Again.

Quistis stood on the edge of a wooden plank. A boundless ocean lay one step in front of her. There was only a plank between her and perdition.

(I bet you're all wondering how I got into this mess. Listen to my story. This...may be my last chance.)

It all started when Quistis hitched a ride on a ship to get across the sea to reach her next destination. Unbeknownst to her, it was actually a pirate ship. The captain, a young-looking man with shocking pink hair named Faris, had taken her to his quarters for what she assumed was an interrogation.

"What do you have to barter for safe passage? Why should I not just throw you overboard right now?" Faris asked.

Quistis was perplexed. "I have plenty of money. I'm willing to pay if that's what you want," she said.

"Bah, I don't need your money. I'm looking for something that's valuable to you, preferably something rare," the young captain declared.

Well, as far as something she was carrying on her person right now, Quistis could only think of one thing. "Do you play cards?" she asked.

Faris gave a wide smile at the question. "That's what I'm talking about! You get one game. If you win, you get passage to a destination of your choice. If you lose or it's a draw, then you'll be walking the plank. No rematches and no cheating."

Quistis wasn't sure she trusted a pirate to play with honor, if the stories she'd heard were to be believed, but she would never defile the sanctity of Triple Triad by cheating, even with her life on the line.

"Deal," she agreed as she pulled her cards out of her pocket. "Perhaps we could have a cup of tea first?"

"That can be arranged," Faris said. "You seem pretty confident."

As she sipped her tea, Quistis figured she'd make a bit of small talk. She noticed a portrait on the wall of someone with very pale skin, almost white blonde hair, and a lot of black makeup. "Who is that?" she inquired.

"That's me," Faris replied.

(If you say so. It doesn't look anything like you.)

With their tea consumed, the game began. Faris was a better player than Quistis expected, and he took a quick advantage. However, with his last move, he had left himself open to a rule that, to be fair, most players struggled to anticipate.

Quistis threw down her Celes card and activated the Plus rule, flipping over three cards in rapid succession and winning the game. Faris sat there stunned for just a moment, and then uttered a single word: "Cheater."

(And that brings us back to the present, and I'm no closer to figuring a way out of this.)

Then Faris did something strange. He bellowed a hearty laugh, and the rest of the crew followed suit. "It was just a joke! I needed to pay you back for beating me, but you won fair and square. Where are you headed next?"

Quistis still wasn't sure, but she could figure that out tomorrow.

ehhhh welll for some reason I was thinking faris spends most of the game not even trying to hide her gender, but tbh I don't even remember if that's true

My main intent was to say you only played beginning of FFV, in a mocking tone

I mean it stops being a thing anyone cares about once the party figures it out but she also stops being a pirate at that point and I wanted a pirate story

hmmmm that's true, she does just stop being a pirate huh. I always think of her as like, a pirate by nature. Can't believe she didn't get a card.

also you got me thinking, do the characters in the 2D games see each other as their sprites or their official art?
