I played through it for the first time ever earlier this year and it's like the most mid ass action game of that gen. No wonder they scrapped the plans for a sequel.

I'm not sure how you make a God of War knockoff in Purgatory in the first place.

It's okay. Not necessarily great, but good. Indifferent I guess.

I think the game is most remembered for its insane marketing campaign. Talked about a little here.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/5yi3o1/lets_talk_about_one_of_the_strangest_marketing/

Let's talk about one of the strangest marketing campaigns for a game: Dante's Inferno

So, I'm not sure if you remember, and I don't blame you if you don't, but Dante's Inferno was a game that released a few years back loosely based on The Divine Comedy. Sort of like a God of War clone, it got OK reviews, but what really stuck out to me was the marketing campaign the game had.

First, you had the publisher (EA) offering a $6.66 (Number of the beast) discount on September 9th, 2009 (9/9/09). I know now we see EA as an evil corporation, and yeah, they are in it for the money, but it's kinda odd to see them do something like that. Even stranger was EA sending $200 checks to journalists in the mail, prodding them to either accept and succumb to greed (one of the rings in Dante's hell) or don't, and suffer for prodigality (wasteful spending).

Then, you had a website that would deem you a heretic for ordering the game. However, I think that the weirdest part of this marketing campaign was the publishers sending small wooden boxes to select developers. When opened they would play "never gonna give you up" and could only be stopped by destroying the box with a hammer. Yea, I guess the game wasn't a resounding success based on the rather elaborate marketing campaign, but has there ever been a game that had such a strange marketing campaign? One that just sort of did the craziest shit to get their game out there?

Actually yes, and I don't like that type of game generally.

I did not like the babies crawling out of nipples though. That was too much.

Spoilers for the end of Inferno game

You beat up Satan in the final battle and gain entrance to Purgatory but as you are walking in, the camera shows that Satan managed to sneak in a bit of himself to reform and heal up inside Purgatory and it's implied Purgatory is about to get invaded or corrupted or something

BTW, a few years after Dante's Inferno came out, Diablo 3 came out and

One of the acts takes place in Heaven, under siege by Hell. So it's been done before

It's a very 2010-era game, and it screams it so hard it feels almost weird to play in the modern day. I actually played it again recently after I saw some YouTuber make a way too long video essay about it.

It feels like this weird mix of overly ambitious and "lazily colour-by-numbers whatever is popular in the game industry right now". But it does the lazy color-by-numbers stuff pretty decently as well.

I'm gonna say "like" but really only barely. I certainly wouldn't consider it a bad game, but its not really something worth going out of your way for.

I'm one of those weirdos who absolutely adores this game. Even more than GoW. I platinum'd it and dream of the day they decide to do a random remaster/ sequel.

That being said, EA trying to manufacture controversy with that ad campaign was one of the stupidest things they've ever done. And being that they're EA, that's really saying something.
