It's a pretty good flex to beat him once and full restore him already knowing his son is going to be able to beat his ass again too.

Because he was playing to Cell's obvious arrogance knowing the buttons to push to get him to "do a Vegeta" and unlock Gohan's potential. I thought that was rather obvious.

It's been noted before that a tired annoyed Cell is just as likely to just blow up the Earth as he is get curious about Goku's proposal.

Let's not pretend like Goku having his brainfart moments in Z is anywhere close to comparable to the guy who fathered two children not knowing what a kiss is. Goku in Super generally can't even take situations seriously until his buttons are pressed, whereas there are any number of times in Z where he's practically sagacious in his composure and outlook on things.

Goku in Super is so out of character he gives Kid Goku at his youngest a run for his money on the dumbness (and Kid Goku at least has the excuse he was literally raised in the mountains and didn't know a thing about the outside world). Late DB and Z make an outright point that while Goku isn't the smartest tool in the shed he did actually grow up and mature in those years he spent with Kami, Super reverts him in to a literal manchild.

Vegeta also got hit by the same brush with his character boiled back down to having an inferiority complex and childishly competing with Goku all the time.

People always overanalyze Goku's behavior and it's wild. He's so damn simple and always was. He wants him to fight at full power for a good fight. He was confident Gohan could win with Cell at full strength, he wanted to see it.

If Cell was at 100% he'd probably be more likely to entertain the ''Gohan has crazy potential'' theory since he wouldn't feel threatened at all. A tired Cell might be more easily irritated that Goku quit, not give Gohan the time of day and just kill him quickly to get back to the main course in his eyes.

Bro Goku in Super forgets to bring a damn seal when trying to Mafuuba Zamasu away so the technique doesn't work at all. That would be like if Z Goku forgot to bring both potara earrings when trying to fuse with Vegeta. Completely different scale of stupidity.

Yeah, but at that point neither him or Vegeta were planning to use them anymore so it wasn't really a ''Goku being stupid'' moment, moreso a Saiyans being stupid in general moment.

Its this. He simply wants a fair fight. Its the same reason why when Kami blocked an attack from Piccolo during the 23rd Budokai, he allowed Piccolo to have a free hit.
