I had them in college for awhile, both strangers and friends. they were generally fine, although I didn't interact much with the ones who weren't previously my friends.

I would say poorly to quite poorly. He had a musty ass ferret that bit a hole in his water bed and it soaked most of my mtg card collection I had stored in the closet. Then he ran up 100s calling 900 numbers

They can vary wildly. Even living with friends or people you know isn't guaranteed to be a good time. I got tired of roommates eventually and just took on the more expensive living alone route.

Bills and food costs are higher but the peace of mind is absolutely worth it.

Here's the worst I had

  • Never closed or turned off anything after he finished using it. Like cupboards, drawers, lights, the front door, the refrigerator, the shower, the oven
  • Somehow sustained himself mostly on soda
  • On the off chance he tried to cook something he'd put a sausage on a pan and forget about it until it was charcoal welded to the pan
  • Zero pain tolerance. Would scream bloody murder because he just pinched his finger on his glasses hinge or something
  • Spent all his waking hours screaming at League of Legends
  • Stole my laptop. When I went to get it back he had a stack of broken computers, and he'd just put a new one on top when one broke. My laptop was just the latest PC to play League
  • He had a bunch of bottles of old apple juice around his desk. Realized it wasn't apple juice
  • Never washed his dishes. Tried for months to get him to do any sort of house work. Eventually I just put his dishes on his bed. He just sort of pushed the pile of soggy dishes aside and slept with them. He probably still sleeps with them to this day.

i've had incredibly shitty roommates - trashed the house, never stocked supplies, loud as fuck all the time

i've had incredibly mediocre roommates - kept the house clean and stocked but always tried to be super friendly and drag me into their social spaces

i've had incredibly amazing roommates - kept the house clean, stocked their own stuff, and LEFT ME ALONE

I had three in college with varying success.

The first was generally pretty chill, but he had a long-distance girlfriend and he'd get FURIOUS about her going out with friends or something. He'd get really red in the face and punch the wall while I was like two feet away just =|ing and pretending I couldn't hear despite the room being tiny as hell.

The second was I guess as much of an introvert as me, because we just said really basic hellos on the first day and then just kind of never spoke, ever. He was gone a lot anyway and eventually functionally moved out to live with his girlfriend and didn't show up for weeks at a time. It was a little weird, but I'm just really quiet and I sort of think he was too.

The third was honestly great. We got along super well, talked a lot, studied together at times, etc. Was a really good overall experience.

In college I lived in a six room house for three years with various roommates rotating through. I had one of the best friends of my life and also a guy who, first night after moving in told everyone else he hated me and asked when he would get a chance to have a threesome with another roommates girlfriend. At another point he locked himself out of the house at 3am, punched the glass by the front door and had to call an ambulance to go to the ER. I came home from my girlfriend at the times house the next morning and found a broken window and a blood soaked front porch. I was the first one to even know about it lol. I've had just about every kind in between too.

I lived in backpackers for a few years (usually staying in a room with 3-4 people). I wouldn't do it again as the living conditions weren't great, but it was a good way to make lots of international friends (my best friends over the course of those years were French, Dutch, Ecuadorian, Mexican and Argentinian). The South American backpackers were especially warm and welcoming even when I was the only one who didn't speak Spanish. There was only one bad roommate the entire time, who was too loud and enjoyed insulting people.

Shared a house with 3 other people while I was at university.

It was all pretty drama-free. A couple of arguments about not cleaning up and a few intoxication incidents. That was it.

I've never had roommates, and at this stage in my life, I can't see myself ever having roommates, unless we're intimate with each other.

I barely see mine and we work together. When we're home, he's in his room playing the game with his guild mates. I really only see him when he goes to the bathroom or leaves to get food.

Lived with two buddies for six years and we have know each other for over twenty years, it wasn't great lol.

I had to listen to them complain about the other one and stuff that annoyed them that the other did. I dreaded the summer time when it was time to start putting on the AC because that was always a big deal. One would get annoyed when the other would turn it on when they thought it wasn't that hot. The other would call him a penny pincher over it lol.

It had its fun moments but not something I'd ever do again unless I had to.

I've definitely had problems with roommates over AC/heating before. It's never been a cost thing though, I just like temperatures slightly higher than most people I've lived with.

good people, but I hated living with them. Both places didn't have dishwashers so we had to handwash our own dishes, which all of us were lazy and it would pile up. I don't think I could go back and do that now. I enjoy my privacy.

I had a good friend move in for about a year. He was actually the perfect roommate. It was actually kinda weird because I thought we'd do more stuff together lol. But he mostly stayed in his room. The only drama was at the start when he first moved in and complained about cat allergies and cat litter smells. Which...was stupid because he'd been over many times before and could have brought up the complaints prior to moving in.

I did however have him sign a rent/legal agreement thing. So that there was verbiage on how much the rent was, and other various legal things like how many days advance notice we had to give if we asked him to leave.

Would my friend qualify? I lived with him at the start then he lived with me at the end. He wasn't really there much those first 2 years. I was watching over his place while he went working all over the country. He would be there for a week, gone for 2 weeks in California, DC, Indy, San Antonio etc

Had a roommate many years ago in an apt we rented. We were fine for the most part. I admittedly was the messier one.
We had a few minor squabbles but we shared a lot of the same interests.
We eventually moved out and didnt speak for a few years. I think we were just sick of seeing eachother, but weve since reconnected and play basketball a couple times a month and ocassionally game

Then a nightmarishly horrible one just after college.

lost a security deposit once 'cos they put holes in the walls roughhousing.

also 3 AM common-area snack runs hit different when a guy's bringing girls over with apparently not enough discretion as to use their bedroom over the couch

then again, that was college times, I don't and have no plans to ever have housemates again as sharing living space in that way *will* drive me insane within a week or two and I'd rather avoid that
