jojo moved in a direction that, for whatever reason, i didnt vibe with. i read the series even before the new anime was announced, i got in pretty early considering my lack of japanese media consumption

i was all-in from the first chapter

i read up to current (at the time) then kept up with jojolion for several years. but it lost me

the series never hit me with the weight of the end of part 1, caesars end, avdol, iggy. and kakyoin

never hit me with the hype again either. jonathan vs dio (both times), "your next line is", the panic of kars' ascension, every jotaro part, "theres a reason you lost, dio"

i never cried again after part 3, not from hype or from sadness

this isnt bitterposting. im genuinely glad jojo caught so many more people in its net over time. the series and i just moved different directions in life, and it makes me wistful and regretful in a "thats life" sort of way. like best friends or partners drifting apart due to nobody's fault

Yeah, I agree. There was something special about their skills, their wit, determination. Pushing through the odds to win their battles using everything at their disposal.

i prefer the ripple and martial arts stuff, but im not opposed to stands. i love some of what avdol and kakyoin come up with. its around 4 when stand designs start homogenizing though, and part 5 cements it. once you hit 6 and 7 and 8, every stand looks like Judgment, which im not a fan of. and the fights become more abstract and conceptual over time generally speaking. its just not my thing

Part 2 is the best, sure.

Its all great though. Araki is an artist, not just another mangaka looking to get little boys excited.

I cant place why, but stands when they were first introduced was great. Handled very well.... but as time goes on maybe its because they were just trying to go bigger, better, more, that something was lost along the way. It just doesn't hit the same.

I still somewhat enjoy it, but the last season was almost a chore to watch and the newest manga is..... ok.

Stands were a pretty unique concept and has become a trademark ability for the franchise since then. So for better or worse its here to stay.

Hell the other parts shortcomings are generally unrelated to the ability entirely. And dont really affect the story aside from rare instances like in part 5 where one was to OP not to write out of the story. Or Gionos himself that was a mess of a stand so he barely had any fights.

I thought the writing for 4 was peak, while the aesthetic started to get funky.

Like yeah Araki is a great artist when he has time for it, but honestly, starting with part 5, most panels look like crap and he only tries for showcase panels.

That's totally fine, too. The series has been around since the 80s. It didn't have to stay the same, even though I liked it a lot better when they were drawn as huge bodybuilders. There's a giant fanbase who love the modern style and it resonates with the LGBT community, which is great.

yea like i said, i'm glad it's got such a wide reach now and so many are able to enjoy it

Anyway, that stretch between Part 5 and Part 7 is a generational run, although the first 3 parts are a really special trilogy in their own right

Part 4 is my favorite though :(

Part1 and Part 2 had one of the best ending themes

Part 5s anime does a great job with the tone and atmosphere

Its also one of my favorite looking parts visually of the anime adaptations

overall i agree but i finished 8 and found it meh. 9 might be good though. pumped for the part 7 anime

8 was really disappointing to me because

1. they have multiple more interesting villains than the main antagonist
2. Basically every female gets shafted HARD. The Higashikata sisters get like one arc each and then fade into the background, multiple girls sit out until the final arc, one never shows up again at all, the moms get jack all to do, etc.

I like some of the moments, Jobin's a great character, there are some banger fights like California King Bed and Love Love Deluxe, and I enjoy the more esoteric, weird af Stands (Stone Ocean is my favorite part, after all), but Part 8's a lower-tier part to me

8 was "Potential Man" the part and collapsed under its own weight. Needed all its mystery threads to come together to something and it just didn't at all. People didn't even believe Jobin was out because it was so ridiculous

I feel the opposite.

I think the stands in later parts had more creative and unique abilities and it led to more unique battles. In Part 3, the main stand abilities were basically guy who punches really hard until the last fight , guy with sword and guy with fire. And while there were definitely creative applications of those powers, I do love the wackier abilities we got later on that felt like they could only be in something like Jojo.

Stands went from being very physical bodies that were largely defined by their size, strength, speed and range, to being defined not by their shape but by their conceptual power. IMO the first major seed of this idea is the Thoth arc, once they've gotten through the arcana.

Stands being physical bodies still tends to matter for the hero characters, but not to the same extent it did in part 3. By part 7 there's almost nothing like that except Dirty Deeds. Part 8 has a bit more humanoid stands but they never tend to use their bodies to attack except Soft & Wet.

I really miss the designs. Like compare Magician's Red to like, Diver Down or some shit
