It's the darndest thing. The other day I met an 18 year old from a small backwater town in the borders of scotland, and she sounded American. Scottish parents, never left the country, went to high school in one place. She should have been like "I dae ken wit you mean" but she was like "nah bruh, that's cap".

The internet is screwing everything up lol

Children learn accents from their parents until they are about five, then they learn from other children via peer pressure. TV and videos has nothing to do with it because it isn't interactive and doesn't mock you for sounding different.

In college, my roommate was from Bulgaria. He mentioned it was always a point of contention in school that the teachers were using British English in language class while the student's were learning most of their English from watching American movies and music.

I mean, there's anecdotal accounts of kids in the US getting Aussie accents from watching too much Bluey. There could be something to what is consumed causing it.

Kinda. I picked up my friends accent spending so much time with him. I also interacted with so many people in a small rural town in FLA. I picked up alot there. For instance his sister lives in TN but was from South FLA. Her accent is TN. Didn't help her half sister was born in TN and lived there all their lives. That just reinforced it.

A question for the TC could her parents be people who moved to Scotland? Or as least 1 parent.

Another case is my neighbor that had moved in across the way. I hear they have a Brit accent. I ask where are you from. They go Canada. I say but you accent is brit. They go we are originally from the UK. So my next question was you moved from the UK to Canada, to middle of nowhere FLA? They go yes. They said as soon as they sell the house they had just built they are moving to Portugal. I said your accent is going to be intresting. Little bit southern, mostly brit, Canadian(Toronto I think) then Portuguese. They laughed. Very nice people

What? Are you saying people pick up different accents because they get mocked by others? Guess I should ask my sister how badly she was mocked after spending two years in Michigan to obtain the Yooper speak. My mocking must've been so bad that I blocked it out of my mind since I picked up a Missouri accent after a year.

This, I hate it so much. So many people under 30 talking in that dumb upspeak everything sounds like a question thing because theyve been raised on US Youtubers.

Theres plenty of tolerable US accents. Dunno why upspeak is the norm for so many now
