Oh, wait, we're counting "The manager did his job for money" as "effort and care," now? Now I see how low the bar was.

"The manager had to serve a bunch of kids. So much effort, so much care!"

oh is that why they hired a guy to dressup like Ronald McDonald?

is that why they had little hates tailor made for birthday parties?

"Here is your burger get outta my sight!"

Look man I was a kid in the 80s & 90s too, but I was raised in NYC and this wasn't McDonald's for me. The play place was poor quality compared to free shit at the school playground. The only thing they had that I couldn't easily find a better version of somewhere else was a ball pit. It was a fun little place to get Happy Meal toys but those toys were such poor quality even in the 80s.

But I do remember being very excited about one thing at McDonald's. It was literally the monopoly game. How the hell do you get more capitalist than selling Gacha stickers to literally kids?

Actually, yeah, the Monopoly game was my favorite thing, too.

Like said, I had a birthday party at McDonald's. It wasn't a large cake and somebody dressed as Ronald or any of that. It was "Okay we closed off a few tables in the center. Here's the drop straws in a cup game. Here's pin the Ronald nose on Grimace but warning the sheet is torn because it's 10 years old and it's the only one we have. Here's the food you paid for. Okay bye."

...Wow the bar has gotten so low it's in the ground.

your are the one who made it

the argument started in post 39
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/400-current-events/81005119/985581978

you
They were also "Here's your f***ing burger" in the 90s, too. They just tried harder to draw in kids in the 90s so that kids would drag their parents there and they could "Here's your f***ing burger" to more people. Nothing has changed other than market research on what will get them the best opportunity to "Here's your f***ing burger."

The reason they don't have the fun stuff now isn't due to losing their soul, the reason is that if they did, they'd come under fire for so heavily marketing fast food to kids during times of obesity.

you literally said

"here is your FUCKING burger" 3 times

I replied

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/400-current-events/81005119/985581996

are you a zoomer of just have a bad memory?

they hosted literal birthday parties at McDonalds and the manager would do their best to make everyone happy

the argument is they didn't just go
"here is your fucking burger"

now you can say they did it for the money but that is not your original argument

and it wasn't hard to find pictures of a smiling managing bringing a cake or a dude dressed as Ronald

and maybe that didn't happen at all McDonalds, maybe they paid more for it

the POINT though is that is MORE than saying
"here is your fucking burger!"

and you know it

even the cleanup afterwards is more work than just "here is your fucking burger"

Okay, now I feel bad because you're acting like somebody just stole your puppy.

I'm sorry. You're right. McDonald's wasn't a corporation, it was a friend. It was family.

McDonald's was there when you lost your first tooth, putting a shiny quarter under your pillow. McDonald's was there when you got rejected by your first crush, letting you know there are more fish in the sea. McDonald's taught you how to play teeball, and went to all of your games. McDonald's was there to help Dom Toretto when he and his gang needed it most.

McDonald's was life, and it certainly didn't start partaking in capitalism until exactly 2020.

do you think corporations can't have soul while making money?

early Blizzard was soulless?

like holy moly this is not a hard concept that the drive to cut costs to make MORE money drains the soul

edit: also the dudes in the 90s were probably paid relatively better encouraging them to do more than just here is your fucking burger which again reinforces my point

They didn't lose their soul, they're protecting their image by making it less obvious that they're peddling obesity to children.

It would still be colorful if they weren't called out for that.

  1. A misleading picture in the OP

Exactly. The corporation never had "soul." Individual managers/employees may have, but it wasn't because of McDonald's. It was because they were good people, which you can find anywhere, in any era.

personally I remember it being a little better than the school playground stuff but honestly as a kid I think most of my excitement around that kind of thing was not from the objective quality of the play place, but because you got to have one at a restaurant. Like, of course school has one, you go there every day it's totally normal. But at a place you go to eat out once every few months and they have a different one? Now that's super cool

An employee faking a smile and bringing you the food you paid for is "here is your fucking burger," yes. 90% chance that employee doesn't give a damn about you. They're doing their job. They are NOT going "out of their way" for you.

If that is going "out of their way" to you, then yes, restaurants all over go "out of their way" for you and are apparently full of soul and not capitalism!

You're confusing McDonald's, the quintessential capitalist machine, for random, individual people who have worked at some of the franchises. McDonald's never had "soul" and doing fun stuff was not an inherent aspect of the corporate establishment. There are probably still people who do fun stuff with their franchises, but it has nothing to do with the "soul" of McDonald's. As stated above, your initial picture comparison is not a difference of soul or heart, but a change in costs, demographics, and marketing.
