I want to go to Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand specifically) but the wife has no interest in going

and she wants to continue all inclusive beach resort vacations FML

thinking of going solo on a trip

I dont think Id travel alone while married. I did travel alone when I was single.

My husband goes along with whatever I want to do though.

Never been on vacation. I worked sun up to sundown 7 days a week all year for close to 30 years. I'd visit family on holidays but that's it. I think if my health had held up I would have taken one.

I do it regularly. My holidays are a mix of going solo, going with friends and going with my wife.

I get a lot more time off than her, so she doesnt expect me to not use it for holidays.

You should totally go and see SE Asia though. As somebody who lives there and has spent the last few years travelling a fair bit there, its fucking ace.

Ive taken work trips that are pretty much a vacation for myself because the locations are great. But my wife loves to travel so I dont have to worry about taking a vacation without her.

I'm not sure.

I don't mind the traveling alone part but I'm not really someone who goes out sightseeing/visits land marks, and I only get any enjoyment from them if I'm with someone.

Believe me when I tell you that it will be an issue if its a destination she has no interest in going in

Trust me I wanted to go to southeast Asia for a long time now and all shes interested in are basic girl vacations (Disneyland, all inclusive beach resorts, etc.) so im stuck going to some of her boring vacations that are not my type

That sucks. How about a cruise? Its all inclusive, mostly thoughtless and see great things.

My wife is from the Philippines and I just got a job there so were going to travel alot. Shes actually going to travel more than me since she wont have to work.

I dont think I could be with somebody like that. My condolences.

I've only traveled solo for work. All my vacations abroad have been with my wife or immediate family.

I would, but I'm not married.

It would depend on my wife's temperament I suppose. Would she be fine with it, would she not be fine with it, would she pretend to be fine with it and then hold it against me afterwards?

Yeah I was always interested in it so I did one this year and enjoyed it. I want to do another in the future. I know theres things like all inclusive tours in Europe that you can see a bunch of different stuff but they take care of things like lodging, busses and I think food. Might scratch both of your itches.

I've done a cruise before a few years back.

Cruises have amazing food (get one that includes food), activities/entertainment on the ship, shopping, and they do have suggestions to go (including tours) outside the ship during stops. So in terms of planning, it's less stressful and definitely more relaxed, and it's safe. The water doesn't really get that rough. If you get prone to motion sickness, you might not need it, or at least all that often.

It's only annoying if you go with a big group, and certain people wanna do different stuff. Went I went to a cruise in the Mediterranean, I wanted to explore in the stops as much as I could and wake up early, ea breakfast, and take a smaller boat to the place.

The only thing about cruises is that they do take you to the more touristy areas.. So some places could be crowded.

Oh and wifi is stupid expensive on cruises, and tours outside the ship are cheaper than what the cruises offer.

I basically do that for work. I do a business trip and tack on a few days to do vacation stuff. I saw Egypt that way (conference in Cyprus, flew to Cairo for a weekend).

No... I don't even like going to like the theater by myself... Vacationing by myself sounds awful...

I went to SEA a couple years ago and saw quite a few lone foreigners, especially on the bus trips to tourist destinations.

Personally, I wouldn't want to go all that way and not experience it with someone. Plus it's nice to have someone to fall back on if you're unsure about something and it seems safer overall. I never really felt unsafe, but there are a lot of people who will try to get your money one way or another and prey on tourists.

It all depends on how you're built. I don't think I'd go back any time soon due to the plane trip(s) alone, or at least spend a lot more on tickets with better seats than economy. It was miserable being packed in like a sardine for hours and hours and multiple flights just to get there and back to the eastern US. It was 6 flights total round trip being in the air for over 40 hours, not counting time spent at airports.

Hell yeah. I love solo birding trips. Nobody to worry about but me.

Ive moved across the world multiple times solo, so a vacation is easy.

Ah, but thats one of the things thats great about travelling solo. Nothing to stress out about without an itinerary. Youre on your own time and expectations. Nobody else to worry about.

Ive travelled solo, with family and with friends and I much preferred the trips on my own

I'm sure those places have all inclusive resorts. Your wife could base herself there while you explored a bit.

They do, and they have incredibly nice ones that are much cheaper than western ones, but trying to convince somebody to fly from the US to somewhere like Thailand in order to stay in a resort that could just as well be somewhere nearer to home is a big ask.

I asked my friend once what was his favorite place in the world. He was Navy and air force so He he went all over. He said Thailand. He loved the food, the women there and how beautiful it was. His first wife was from Thailand

100% agreed with that. Last year I went to Japan solo and in a month I'll be in the Netherlands solo. In Japan I loved being able to go where ever I wanted whenever I wanted, with no one around to negotiate on activities. Also I had a list of locations to visit for the entire trip, and every morning in the hotel I could just pick one and go, no having to talk it over with the group to make sure everyone agrees.

If certain people I know were with me and we walked past a garden, they would want to stay and look at it for 30 minutes. But while alone, I walk to it, say that's pretty, take a picture, and keep walking onto the next activity. I was able to see a ton of stuff in my time there.

Yeah, solo travelling can be great for that.

Personally, I like going somewhere on my own, discovering cool places, then sharing with people the next time I go back.

no, I wouldnt travel solo while married with kids. Part of being a parent is recognizing that vacations arent 100% about you anymore

No, for safety reasons. I like having someone to look out for me, watch my back, etc. It gives me a sense of security.

Can't speak to international travel, but solo vacations are great.

I could see myself doing that. On my last overseas trip I broke away from the tour group a couple times and spent some time walking around Innsbruck and Munich by myself and it was lots of fun. Munich in particular had some really cool little spots off the beaten path to find

Yes. I'm preparing to go on a number of trips starting in about 4 to 5 years or so. Japan is first on the list.

I keep having to go to theirs (thats picked for me whether Im interested or not) but nobody lets me pick where I want to go

dude im sick of the basic girl style vacations already. nothing in an all inclusive resort sparks my interest. its not really my cup of tea.

I wouldnt mind it sometimes but Ive got a family so no.

I'm going on my first 100% solo trip in September. It's for a wedding, but I'll be exploring a different part of the country for 4 days on my own leading up to it. I'm excited and scared!

Previously I had some days on my own for work trips. But the bulk of the trip was arranged by the company, so it doesn't really count.

Not with my own money but when I traveled outside of the country for academic conferences I stayed an extra day or two to go out and explore on my own

I prefer to camp and fish alone.
