That's the vibe I get. Canadians/French/Dutch people aren't really conservative/nationalist, the majority are atheist/no religion, etc. The USA/UK has Donald Trump/BREXIT, many people from the USA/UK are VERY Christian, etc. A lot of hardcore Christian/conservative channels on YouTube tend to be from the USA/UK, I have noticed. The "Anti-SJW" and "anti-woke" YouTube channels are almost all from the USA/UK. ... Copied to Clipboard!

All of those countries (except maybe Holland) have a huge amount of diversity of opinion within them, typically spread across geographic regions. Canada and the US are both titans. Generally, yes, Americans and Brits are more conservative than those others. However there are a lot of extremely far right Canadians and French. There's a movement in Alberta calling for separation from Canada based pretty much exclusively on a mix of racism and a desire to become serfs to oil executives. --- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XiCtAUrZbUk -- Defeating the Running Man of Ocarina of Time in a race since 01/17/2009. -- ... The USA is both the most conservative and the most liberal country, nothing screams liberal more than pink haired 20-something attending a west coast university and complaining about the social issue of the week. America in general is a country of contradictions, we are the most peaceful people and the most violent, the most prudish people and the most sexual, the smartest people and the dumbest, etc. --- Muscles Chicago Bears | Chicago Blackhawks | Chicago Bulls | Chicago Cubs | NIU Huskies ... faramir77 posted... All of those countries (except maybe Holland) have a huge amount of diversity of opinion within them, typically spread across geographic regions. Canada and the US are both titans. Yeah, but the far-right Canadians/French/Dutch don't have the resources that the Americans and the Brits do. Im not saying the USA/UK was founded on conservative/nationalist views, it's more like it became that as a result of the Cold War and the War on Terror. Don't forget the fear of "atheistic Communism" is still ingrained in many Americans/British people's minds. However, most of American/British media in the 1990s/early 2000s was quite anti-religious and liberal/left-leaning. The Simpsons, South Park, Family Guy, Rick and Morty, etc. South Park seems to have moved to the center/right-of-center in recent years, though. I have noticed that American media/politics/academia tends to be more left-wing, but the population is split. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Quebec has tried to separate from Canada a few times and Alberta wants to now because they're far-right. It should be noted that both those provinces have majority of their land owned by First Nations, who have stated they will never leave Canada, so if Quebec and Alberta tried to leave, they would be these weird pockets of land. The rest of the land would be federal which would stay in Canada. --- Your loyalty lies on the wrong side of the future ... Copied to Clipboard!

Sometimes I think about prohibition era liquor laws, they were probably seen as "progressive" when they were introduced right. but now, here in BC we have new progressive policies being introduced to relax laws around public consumption of liquor in parks, and sale of wine in supermarkets etc. That is why "progressive or conservative" is not really a great dichotomy for comparison, depending too much on cultural context to compare different nations. In other words there are a large number of conservative people everywhere it just means something different depending on where you are in the world. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Dutch Christian here. I don't really do politics, preferring to leave those to politicians and waitresses. I like to keep those things separate. On the whole I would say yes, but in the case of the US such a dramatic overgeneralization misses the context. Americans are EXTREMELY polarized. The US system is rigged to make sure that the right wing wins, but every time a hard left progressive gets a legitimate shot the left wingers in the US always take it. If the US gets balkanized in the future, it would still be kind of surprising because of our constant chanting of "unity" but everyone would understand because the contrast between the two Americas is so sharp. ... People are really downplaying how left-wing Canada, France and the Netherlands are in comparison to the USA/UK. Victor Hugo regularly attacked the wealthy and Christians in his novels. It's only the movies that downplayed the "eat the rich, religion in is bad" in both Les Misrables and Hunchback of Notre Dame. Victor Hugo would be considered a COMMUNIST in the USA/UK. The original Claude Frollo from Hunchback of Notre Dame was a priest, not a judge. Also, the student revolutionaries in Les Misrables are a group of anarchists/communists/socialists/liberals who even call each other "comrade" and raise their fists, communist style. Don't forget the red flags. Most famous Canadian and Dutch writers tended to be very left-wing by USA/UK standards as well. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Americans are pretty left leaning but our only left leaning party is largely hated for being a weak monopoly that gatekeeps further left politicians.
