Maybe non-gamers should start with simpler games, like side scrollers. People here are saying that their non-gamer wives can't use both analog sticks at the same time, so maybe try with just the d-pad

I've definitely had my gf say "can you beat this level for me" when she plays action games.
Her jam is more settlement building and whatever genre Lethal Company/REPO/Peak is.

She wanted to play a scary game so we started playing some weird game called the devil inside me or something and it is basically just like a telltale walking dead game. She just cant figure out that damn camera

Side scrollers these days are pretty niche though.

Games that pick up traction among non-gamers are usually more casual "viral" successes like Fall Guys, Infinity Nikki, Animal Crossing, Split Fiction. Probably the way you control a character directly in 3D space is the most intuitive. Although Stardew Valley was an outlier in that regard.

i can't watch streamers i like play games i like. it absolutely sucks. if i watch streams it's one or the other, for the player or for the skill

Those of us who spent way too much time playing video games growing up really take for granted what a difficult mental exercise it is to simultaneously operate two separate directional inputs within a separate 3D space (being represented on a flat surface) outside ourselves. It takes a lot of practice.

For that matter, operating any sort of proxy is a skill that needs to be developed. Well-designed control schemes help to make that process more intuitive and automatic, but "moving something that isn't me" isn't something that comes naturally to a lot of people and those of us that have been gaming since near-birth do indeed tend to take for granted that we're able to do it without a second thought.
