Just saw Remake and Rebirth have pretty sweet Prime Day deals (the I-VI all in one remake also has a good deal). Bought Remake.

Going to get this trilogy rolling tomorrow.

"I think we both need a break," Cid suggested. "There's somewhere I want to take you."

With that, we traveled to Rosaria. It was a rustic land that was a mixture of natural beauty and desolate wasteland. It was a strange dichotomy.

"This is my homeland," Cid told me. He went on to explain to me how it ended up in this state and what he was trying to do about it.

"Why are you telling me this?" I asked.

"I dunno, just felt like it," Cid said casually. "You remind me of someone I know. Brooding guy with a traumatic past but a natural leader. That sorta thing is all the rage in our line of work, for some reason."

(You don't even know my past though.)

"I know what you're thinking. I don't know your past, and it's true I don't know any specific details. It's just the vibe you give off. I can sense it. Whatever is in your past, don't let it chain you down. There are no do-overs in life, but you can start fresh from where you are right now. Your past doesn't define you. You're not bound by fate. The future, unlike the past, is yours to make."

I didn't really know how to respond to that, so I just said, "Thanks...for all your help."

Cid talked for a little while longer. He told me about his daughter, Mid, and some of his other important friends. I didn't really understand why he had decided to share all this with me, but I listened.

"Let's play cards, eh?" Cid offered after he had finished his story.

"...Don't do this," I said.

"Listen to me, Squall. I'm choosing to place my trust in you. I know you can finish this. I think she knows it, too, and that's why we're rapidly approaching the end of the line. I'll do my part, so you do yours. Now let's play."

After all Cid had told me today, I couldn't deny his final request. We played one round. No words were spoken. We just enjoyed the game, and I finished it off with my own card.

"I was hoping you'd use that one. Good game," Cid said. "Well, that's enough for me. Don't let me down, you hear?"

He walked away, leaving unspoken what we both knew he was trying to say.

Goodbye.

In the morning, I found Cid's body, and I found some clues he had left me. I knew he wouldn't let me down. He had given me the push I needed to keep going.

(Here I am, alone again, with just a step between me and death. You may think you've got me right where you want me, but you're wrong. This isn't over. Not yet. Because I'm not truly alone. I'm here now due to all those who've supported me along the way, whether I realized it or not. I'm okay leaning on that support. Whatever happens from here happens, but it won't be because I gave up. I'll fight until the end.)

That was grim.

At least Cid died a hero (not really he died because a teenage girl threw a bunch of snowballs at him). He inspired Squall to get the job done (or get killed by snowballs).

To be clear, it wasnt grim because Cid died. It was grim because he just gave up (and Squall was cool with that).

Well, the idea is more that he knew Ritz was targeting Squall and he took his spot, knowing there was a good chance he wasn't coming back, so he wanted to make sure he gave him some good parting words. He didn't say goodbye aloud just because he wanted to believe he'd come back.

Kind of a meta reference to how Cid took the hit for Squall yesterday.

It's one of those things where you just have to roll with what you're given when you have to write a scenario where you know the character dies and you don't really get to decide how or when they die. It's a weird challenge, but I thought Cid and Squall having serious interactions would be more meaningful here.

But you all can make sure Cid's sacrifice wasn't in vain

For three more rounds, at least, and then the story can end

Unless you want to ride the story all the way to the final...!

Sabin is another one of those where sports influences my pronunciation because I think of Nick Saban (even though it's spelled slightly differently), just like how I thought of George Seifert for Seifer.

It's also a cooler sounding name than sah-bin
