JP is at least honest. Axl is the main character by any honest assessment, and X is an afterthought at best.

Mega Man X7, but X is in the back behind Axl and Zero in the JPN art. Then again, I read that he's not even playable in it until the later parts of the game, so I guess it fits when looked at like that.

Yeah. NA is better-looking to me but the JP one is honest for what you'll get when playing the game. So I'm torn.

It's true. You have to rescue half the reploids or finish the eight maverick stages.

Not only that, but he contributes almost nothing to the story. He talks about how fighting doesn't solve anything, then gets his ass kicked. It's been a while but as far as I remember, that's all he actually contributes to the story.

Even Zero is pretty much just there to run into Axl and take him back to Hunter base, and also get his ass kicked. It's literally Axl: the game.

NA = Better looking
JPN = Truer to the game
EU = An entry in a coloring book

I think JPN is about as close as your going to get to the later games. X6-X8 had very little to do with X as a character and moreso about building Axl and Zero as stand alone characters. A direction I wasn't a huge fan of. I just want classic X1-3 gameplay.

For MMX7, NA looks cooler but fools you into thinking you're gonna play as X instead of shit-ass Axl

I hate how bad Capcom fumbled this series. They could have at least introduced Axl before the game where you have to play as him.

...Though I guess they pulled a similar stunt with DMC4. But that game didn't suck.

Not EU, that's for sure. What the hell was with the godawful Mega Man box art in that time period in the EU? The Battle Network Series had some awful ones too. The funniest one to me is the Red Sun one since it used a form that was never in the games and was anime only, lol.

I'm going with JPN since it showcases Axl. You don't even get to play as X until way later. I am fond of the US box art too, though.

It has to be the JP art. Both the NA and EU arts is pretty bull-shit since X himself takes a bit of a backseat for this one. At least let the scrappy get the leading role for the cover art since its his story.

It was an idea that could have worked in a better game, without the false advertisement.

He's always had the pacifism thing going on, and they did need a way to keep the player from ignoring the new guy.

It's just that the new guy sucked and stuff.

Man I hated Axl and the game in general, but I think he was the main focus, so I gotta give this one a to JP. But man, EU is a travesty. It looks like it could be a fake knockoff lol. Maybe if there was a slight name change like Megoman X7

JPN and NA ones are good. EU is putrid dogshit and an insult.

Subjectivity, yada yada, but 36% choosing the NA box art is wild. But comparing all three, it seems they had trouble drawing X in such a way that wasn't terrible.

pretty sure both the JP and NA versions have the same drawing of X, just that JP's is scaled to be bigger and with less opacity

Yes

But in X8, in addition to that, he's also balanced against the other two gameplay-wise. He's the quickest of the three, has rapid fire, and can use all his best abilities without consuming energy. Even when you consider the blue armor (I'm not counting the ultimate armor), Axl is a decent pick instead of being relegated to the guy you take with you because there's a thing you can't get otherwise.

In X7 its nothing absolutely needed and is only used for a reploid rescue or something like that.

Its why everyone agrees that axl's transformation ability in X7 is very tacked on, because it legit is.

In X7 X really is just axl but better in every single possible way. At the same time axl's gameplay is better then how shit they made zero in this game.

The optimal way to play X7 is to intentionally save those upgrade chips to completely max X, and then to completely max axl. Don't give zero nothing, lol. The one and only time I played X7 was via the collection and so what I did was save all those chip upgrades for X, and gave the rest to zero. I left axl completely abandoned and had no issue clearing the game+rescuing all the reploids.

X8 really fixed a lot of X7's problems. It's a shame that it was too late.
