What is with updates to software always sucking though

More importantly, why is Android trying its hardest to look like iphone when the whole point of why we got android is because we didn't want ios iphones.

Google and Android had nothing to do with this and is doing their own thing for the Pixel.

This was my first smartphone and the UI was actually pretty workable.

In fact I tried putting a custom ROM on it and ended up reverting it because the stock UI was more my speed.

Goddamn Samsung. Maybe I should finally make the switch over to a different Android like google pixel. I've been using samsung for 11 years ever since making the switch from iphone. It is wild how amazing samsung seemed a decade ago and how shitty it's been since.

I can't stand pixel and there forced "at a glance" on the home screen and their forced google search bar on the hone screen crap. I don't want to have to download a custom launcher to remove those things.

One UI 7 is uglier than 6.1 but it's still better than pixel's forced garbage to me.

And you don't think what Samsung is doing is forcing? I cannot stand One UI on my work S22. Using Nova becomes almost a requirement.

You can turn off at a glance.

I'm pretty sure OnePlus/Sony/other brands have their own Android operating systems. I know LG had a really nice Android OS. The only reason I switched from LG to Samsung is because LG isn't in the market anymore. The downside to using lesser known brands is they don't get as many years of support/updates as the big boys like Google, Samsung, Apple. My LG phones only got like 1 update before being obsolete. The big brands get like 7 years of updates now.

Sony makes good phones but you run into the problem of having fewer accessory options and the last time I had one, it did not receive updates anywhere near as frequently as my Samsung or Pixel.

Also not a fan of this Pixel phone though, I agree that the forced search bar at the bottom is obnoxious. And it's just kinda mediocre

My new Fairphone 6 has 6 guaranteed OS updates (and tech support until September 2033) and it comes with Android 15.

I think it's okay. The changes that annoyed me most (the excessive translucence, segregating notifications from the rest of the dropdown panel and resetting my clock to that ugly 2-tiered clock) can be turned off/reverted. App icons started disappearing from the home screen whenever those apps were updated so I did have to turn on the home screen lock. The battery icon does look worse but that's not a big deal to me.

Got One UI 7 on my S23 Ultra and I love it. My phone runs as smooth as ever and I appreciate all the thoughtful, quality of life improvements. Lol sure it "sucks" until core Android adopts these features in newer OS versions since that's usually the case.

Don't mention Pixel. Nobody cares about it and the sales reflect that.
the whole point of why we got android is because we didn't want ios iphones.
Speak for yourself. The reason I ditched iOS was because it's 5-10 years behind where Android is. In the Year of Our Lord 2025 the default iOS keyboard still doesn't have a dedicated numbers row.

I don't know how to describe this, but they changed the placement of where you can swipe down or up to either search for something or see your notifications. Before it was perfectly positioned, but now I have to turn it off because simply just touching my phone causes it to pull up the menu. The problem is I lose the search feature when I'm trying to find an app eg android auto. Really wish they didn't tinker with something that already worked well.

I don't know what you're describing but here goes:

Fully pull down the notification shade > tap the pencil icon up top > tap Panel Settings in the upper left > tap Together

This makes so that accessing and using the notification shade is exactly like it was before.

Oneplus OxygenOS > Samsung One UI > Xiaomi MiUI global

Thanks to this topic, I only just found out about Nova Launcher. I just lived with OneUI before, and thought any modification would have to be at the kernel level with jailbreaking and sideloading operating systems. Glad to have been proven wrong. The scrolling app search renders OneUI virtually unusable by comparison.

Basically what I mean is, when I'd pull down I'd get a quick glance at my 5 main apps something like this

That's because of the separation of the alerts pull-down from the settings one. Settings used to be expanded by pulling them down a second time, but now you get to them by swiping left/right, or by doing your iniitial swipe down from the right side of the top of the screen vs the left.. I believe if you disable this it should go back to the old appearance.
I found the split very annoying because most of the time I pull down I am wanting to check notifications, and don't want to think about which side of the screen I am pulling down from
