Planning on getting it eventually, want to know how the online is.

I'd probably stick to MVC 1 for awhile though.

Are there casual and ranked lobbies or just one lobby for everyone?

If the casual lobby allows for single button supers I will probably just play ranked.

That was a problem with Power Rangers Battle for the Grid, one button supers ruined it for me.

Game's been out for like 25 years, the tiers are pretty much set in stone at this point.

The difference between top tier characters and the rest is quite large. Since learning characters is a lot of work in MvC2 (comparatively), most people don't bother learning to play lower tier characters well.

basically MvC2 is infamously lopsided in terms of balance. there are four god tier characters - Sentinel, Storm, Magneto and Cable. pretty much every decent top tier team has at least one, often two, of these.

past that, you have a small pool of other characters seen as tournament viable, many of whom are mostly put on teams for powerful assists the four above characters are really good at abusing. Psylocke and Captain Commando are probably the most famous of these.

(that said, every older MvC game is ridiculously unbalanced - idk how active MvC1 is online, but if you go there, get used to fighting Wolverine, Strider, and War Machine (both normal and the gold version), and always with Colossus or Psylocke assist)

The good 7 characters are nearly broken. And those are mostly just your first two characters. There are some good anchor assists that are kinda shitty characters like Captain Commando and Tron Bonne... maybe Akuma or Cyclops.

Everything else besides like Team Clockwork is a mid tier meme team that does stuff like Juggernaut Powerup glitch or Thanos trying to do bubble loops or some really stupid stuff like trying to do air tatsu combos with Ken because the air version is scaled to hit once or twice so if you do it a certain way you can hit 4 or 5 times and do way too much damage.

But yeah, games unbalanced. Cable's air super has like 1 frame start up. You can only block ONCE on incoming tag after a KO so some characters can do setups with the right timing to combo you into basically an unblockable setup that kills you. Don't know why there was people like Max hoping for a "resurgence" of MvC2 with this new online version. They didn't really do anything but port the game.

Beware of the Wazzler.

the game's basically just 4 god tiers, two insanely good assists (psylocke, captain commando), and like 6 top tiers who spam their very degenerate keep-away (blackheart, cyclops) or dumb chip-to-death strats (strider, spiral, dr doom). iron man is like a fringe god tier because his infinite is stupidly practical. outside of cyclops and iron man you don't really find the top tiers often

the game has a reputation for being fast-paced but only because storm, magneto, and sentinel are the faces of competitive. pretty much everyone else that's relevant just spams projectiles and runs away. cable's basically only a god because hyper viper is absurdly overpowered, and even then storm, magneto, and sentinel can be very lame and it's a legitimate strat to fly to the top of the screen and hide while farming meter.

i didn't expect a balance change at all because the old guard would not engage with the release if it got any changes, and i don't expect a modern audience to have fun jumping into online having to deal with magneto and storm vortexes over and over. i think casuals can have fun with house rules, but if you're not willing to fight and play as characters who are basically playing with cheat codes you're not gonna have a good time in a serious environment

i replayed the game after having such fond memories of beating msp with my blackheart team on psn. after an hour i realized that i wasn't having any fun and got a refund

Yeah for me all of these games is way more fun just playing in private rooms with friends and family. Children of the atom, x-men vs street fighter, marvel vs street fighter, marvel vs capcom 1 and 2, project justice and capcom vs snk 2 eo on the fighting collection 2.

I need to start playing online again.
