This is a case where he's wrong and stupid but the truth isn't far off.

The team that is now the Cleveland Guardians was founded in 1901 and was an original 8 team of the American League. But yeah, the "original six" is specifically a hockey thing, and I don't think there is an "original 8" type of mystique in baseball.

Guardians is also a reference to the "Guardians of Traffic" which are a collection of statues that can be found standing on the Hope Memorial Bridge in Cleveland. The feathers on the logo are a reference to the feather winged caps that the statues can be seen wearing. The name change in that case is a regional thing.

And the funny thing is that the plans for the new stadium is also taking into consideration adding restaurants and other means to add more revenue and money for eastern D.C. As someone who passes the stadium on the subway train, I can tell you that area would definitely love to see more money put into the community. They already started with tearing up some of the old parking space to put in a kids sports and rec area. But, the name is offensive to the orange ball of lard.
