archizzy 07/22/25 10:13:03 AM #12:	Love it. Im a pretty big overall Kevin Smith fan and frankly that original Jersey Trilogy hits the hardest for me. What really makes it great is Jason Lee. He absolutely shines in Kevins movies. Mallrats will forever have a special place in my memories. At first way back when it came out I didnt even realize it was a Kevin Smith movie. I was in the Navy and we were on a 6 month deployment. They would play movies on my ship on closed circuit tv from a room and they would be on everyones tv in their berthing area where they slept. So I start watching this movie one day and its immediately hilarious and get to the mall and Im like holy shit its Jay and Silent Bob not realizing Kevin made the movie until then. So yeah became a big fan and then in 97 when Chasing Amy came out I was in port so was able to go to the theatre and watch that release. I will always specifically remember that weekend because it released on April 4th and my birthday is April 3rd so that was my birthday celebration weekend of my 21st birthday. Kevin Smith has said over the years that Chasing Amy was inspired by his brother being gay, his relationship with Joey Lauren Adams, whom he was dating during the making of the film, and a crush his producing partner Scott Mosier had on lesbian filmmaker Guinevere Turner.[4][5] Turner met Mosier and Smith at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival where their respective films, Go Fish and Clerks, had premiered. After the festival, Mosier and Turner kept in touch, with Mosier developing unrequited feelings for Turner. Smith told Mosier to channel his heartbreak into a movie about a guy who falls in love with a lesbian, but the filmmakers felt it was too lean a story, so Smith added his own experiences into the character of Holden.[4] Smith wrote, "The character of Holden is the closest to me I've ever written (casting Ben was aesthetically wishful thinking perhaps)."[3] Smith, who said he "didn't really know that much about gay culture, and specifically lesbian culture", had Turner look at drafts of the script for her input.[4] Turner helped find the location for the bar scenes, which were shot at the since-closed Meow Mix in downtown Manhattan.[4] So he has outright admitted he didnt know about lesbian culture and leaned on a lesbian he knew and whenever you are basically leaning on one persons opinion they arent going to be a great representation of everyone.
