Kinda reminds me of a comment I once read on youtube. How female-female marriages have both parties expecting the other to read their mind. So they end up hating each other.

Women initiate more divorces on average. In a heterosexual marriage about 70% of divorces are initiated by women. So it's fairly simple statistics. Two women will have a higher divorce rate and two men will have a lower divorce rate.

Bear in mind that's national data, it varies.

Like, from what I'm seeing, in Massachusetts the lesbian divorce rate is actually lower than the heterosexual rate. Queer relationship divorce rates are very related to the rates of affirmation, tolerance, and acceptance in the macro environment in which they were formed, blue states tend to be lower than red.

But for a couple of factors I've seen posted:

  1. Divorce rates are expected to be higher for a while due to a "marriage drive" in the wake of Obergefell. Bunch of people got married because now they could, not necessarily because they should. Insufficient to describe different rates between gay and lesbian populations, however.
  2. Backlash due to societal expectations or rejection. They get married, get uncomfortable attention because of their relationship, get divorced. Same problem as 1 regarding the difference in rates, however.
  3. Children. Lesbian couples (particularly those that use IVF) run into relatively unique concerns regarding one parent being biologically related and the other not. I say "relatively" because this can arise in other couples, but typically (almost exclusively) due to children from prior relationships, which are a somewhat different deal.
  4. Rushing into marriage. Distinct from point 1 in that it is less "we suddenly have the option when we did not" and more "we moved in together after the second date." Bit of a stereotype for lesbians, but it's not exactly uncommon across queer communities in general.
I spent a while debating if I should bring up the old "U-Haul" chestnut but it appears that was covered.

The bride's family pays for the wedding. When two women get married, both families pay. When two men get married, the wedding is free.

On the other end, divorced men pay alimony and divorced women receive it. When two men get divorced, they both lose money. When two women get divorced, they both gain money. Therefore gay men are incentivized to stay together and gay women are incentivized to break up. It's simple economics.

This is a joke. I KNOW none of these rules are universal. Shut UP.

The napkin theory I've generally bought into is the stress of having kids. Lesbian couples having a kid is not far off of straight couples (though they average less per family) while gay couples have notably less. Having kids is stressful and when you add in all of the other factors they come across as a major factor.

That's interesting. I feel like a lot of pop culture depictions of lesbians generally show them having a large, dedicated female friend group that often consists of couples and former couples/exes etc.

Do your male friends tend to be gay or do you have a lot of straight friends?

I'm gay and my husband and I have been married for four years, and together for eight. He isn't a gamer but he likes to watch me play sometimes.

Also kind of going off what others have said, he is my only male friend. My best friend is female, but also I don't have a lot of friends to begin with. I'm kind of an introvert. On the flipside, my husband is pretty sociable and gets along well with most people.

Roughly speaking, yeah. Last I knew (which, to be fair, was almost a decade ago) straight couples had the highest % of having kids, lesbians weren't super far behind, and gay couples were extremely far behind. The big difference between lesbian and straight couples was that lesbians tended to only have a single kid while straight couples tended to have 2 (with basically all of the 3+ kid families being from straight couples). Thus straight couples tended towards having more kids on average, but when you went by the "has a kid" metric they weren't that different than lesbian couples %-wise.
