Let's say that, in 2028, assuming we still have fair elections, we not only get a Democratic President, but the Dems take control of the House and Senate.

Just 6 months in, Trump's Administration has already done significant damage to our long-standing institutions, civil rights and protections, and global image; I shudder to think were things will be by the end of 2028. But even that aside, we still have a heavily-conservative Supreme Court; we still have the mainstream media who will keep pushing conservative interests; we still have the tech oligarchs who have showed us their collective asses since Trump took office; and we still have the Heritage Foundation still lurking in the background of it all.

There's still a ton of stuff that could go wrong even with a Dem--and the right Dem, not some milquetoast figurehead--taking the reins, and as we know, Americans are impatient and have the memories of goldfish; they could very easily vote the Republicans back in Congress after just two years of what they see--or are fed by the media--as no significant progress being made to fix the mess Trump left behind, and then we have a lame-duck President, which is just more fodder for the media.

None of it matters if the majority of the electorate is still so completely apathetic to the state of our nation that they still refuse to vote regardless of whichever politician is running.

This is important because it's very likely we get some Dem that says "it's important that we move forward" and go back to trying to work with the Republicans and doesn't bother trying to undo all of Trump's damage.

Hard work and time, I guess.

People will have to experience bad times before they'll learn.

the only way to prevent this is if the democrats have such a massive seat advantage in congress to prevent republicans from doing anything significant
but the way american voters are, it will never truly happen and we'll always be roughly 50/50
there's no way to undo what has been done/will be done by the end of this admin in just 2 years, so republicans would be voted back and continue to do more damage

I can't imagine someone like that making it past an open primary even with the party's finger in the scale. People want change, not to go back to the status quo. Your post is textbook status quo.

If we started today, we could maybe get within spitting distance of where we were a year ago just in time for climate collapse.

And establishment Dems are all about status quo. That's why they fight so hard against the left-wing of the party that want actual change.

Mass imprisoning, disenfranchising, and re-education programs will have to happen until we have thoroughly rooted out anything remotely right-wing. We've seen too many times now what happens when we half-ass it.

Reframe the cultural narrative about the MAGA movement and its supporters so that they're not seen as kooky nutjobs and seen as legitimate dangers and threats to democracy and our communities. Use the most basic skills and effort in optics to unite Americans against MAGA and view it/them as enemies the same way we were all briefly united against Bin Laden and terrorists in the post-9/11 era.

As long as Fox News exists and people are so mind numbingly stupid that they watch it, the US will never recover. Trump was already responsible for thousands of deaths during his first presidency and those dipshits voted for him anyway. They will consistently vote against their best interests because they arent intelligent enough to realize they only consume propaganda pushed on them by the elite.

We're completely and utterly cooked, it would take a fucking miracle for things to improve from here.

Trump's a rapist. A child rapist. An actual felon. Even tried to overturn a fucking election and instigated an insurrection. He's blatantly and directly destroying everything just so his billionaire friends can save a little on their taxes. People STILL voted for him by the millions. There's no coming back from this.

Realistically, we aren't, this county's partisan divide was already screwed up before time added an entire generation of young men who've had their brains rotted by influencers and AI.

I suspect either we get a second new deal or the union will break up, Trump has done too much damage for the status quo to linger much longer.

The issue is they've tried framing MAGA as threats to democracy and communities but it doesn't resonate.

Funny enough the only time in the last decade where the Democratic Party or the left in general outplayed the MAGA movement on the cultural zeitgeist was with the "weird" branding last year. They were completely caught off guard by it and had no idea how to respond to it

Then the Dems and left dropped it for some reason.

In any case, branding fascists as a powerful threat doesn't really do much to stop them, it just emboldens them. As weird as it sounds emasculating them and mocking their peculiarities is what seems to resonate with most people.

This, it would take more than a few decades of effort to repair what he has already done. It would take centuries to fix all of it once his term is done, if ever.

The only way we come back from this is if the next president aggressively fights nazis. That means aggressive legal action, aggressive action against corrupt judges, and forcefully overturning the nazis in congress.

Basically there is no legal method to come back from this. Our legal methods, our protections, our separation of powers are null and void. I don't see a method for coming back from this that doesn't basically involve using the military to unseat nazis across the country. I don't think there is a single democrat willing to do it. I don't see a path off civil war.

You need to reform the news media, sort out your corruption issues, put in some much more proportional voting system and aggressively tackle fascism. The single biggest mistake after the civil war was going easy on the confederates.

As long as we continue to elect people who are fully corporate owned nothing will ever really get better.

That was after getting obliterated in WWII followed by a nontrivial military occupation by the Allies (including a partition of Germany that lasted over 50 years) where de-Nazification was one of the main points of the occupation.

It may well take something on a similar scale to deal with the Republican menace, but it will be ugly beyond belief if it comes to that.

I dont think the fascism is gonna go away. At best we keep the broken system Trump left and just....survive.

Either we fizzle out as a country until climate change ends us, or some sort of revolution happens and the states break apart. Latter is probably for the best.
