I'm in a weird position.. I'm not technically laid off yet. I'm furloughed, but I might as well be, because I haven't been working for more than 4 months now..My furlough status got pushed back twice already.

The current market in tech that I'm in, is not doing so well..Especially in my area. Trump and Musk/Doge have screwed things over for the market I work in,NSO it's personal for me

I'm able to collect unemployment, but that's running out in September. Trying to take a 100 day class (at my own pace). I think this while situation has made my ADHD worse

Stay strong y'all

I think you know my answer, but I will respond because it helps others to respond as well.

Only been laid off once and it was in February. Took 3 months to find a new position and with 6 months severance, I netted out pretty damn well

I hope you find something soon. Any bites?

6 months of unemployment last year. For my situation, it was kind of just a nice vacation lol.

And I don't have ADHD, but I could definitely feel my mind getting slower as the months went on. Keeping busy, both physically and mentally, is important.

No, but I was seriously afraid of being laid off due to DOGE and Trump's bullshit earlier in the year. For now it seems my position will survive.

I feel for you, though, TC. I was afraid of going into the tech job market since it's not so hot at the moment. I hope you get back on your feet fast.

I got laid off once, after which I was unemployed for just over a year afterwards. That said, I didn't start looking for a job again for the first 6-8 months or so, as I had some money saved up, and I decided to focus on my creative works for a bit to see if I could get anywhere with them.

I was laid off in 2008 and just chilled on unemployment for like a year, until that ran out. then i sort of kind of started looking for a job for a while, and started working about a year after that.

Thanks man.. No bites (manager interviews since June) unfortunately. I've had a couple phone screens with recruiters since then, but all flakey. One dismissed me because I didn't have the right bachelors degree for the job, despite 10 years is industry experience. It's like why call me, when they already read my resume first. lol

I think it's gonna get worse before it gets better. I hear at least one company having a layoff every week on average. More competition for me.

Honestly, being furloughed has been a net negative experience for me..I think it's hindered me on my job search more vs being straight laid off when I tell recruiters and managers

The first 3 months weren't that bad. I should have settled with the salary on the position instead of the to negotiate for higher (at least one of them). i has the chance to lie and say I'm just looking for another company (while still actively working) and gotten away with it. Actually, by the end of the the month, there was one position I didn't reveal that I was furloughed, and the recruiter was being super weird. Telling me that most of the people he screened were laid off and straight up told me it was strange why I would apply to a contract position with no health insurance. Like I got straight up judged for that.

Never. Since turning 17 I had two jobs my whole life. U.S. Navy and my current job I'm at right now (literally as in I'm at work answering this) since June 28th 1999. Lay offs simply never happen at my job. It is virtually impossible and even if it happened I'm a high level employee who has the most seniority so it wouldn't happen to me even if they decided to lay off a few lower level guys. And in an unrealistic crazy event where I lost my job I think I would simply just go into retirement at this point.

You have my sympathy though. I can understand how that would be stressful.

i cant remember the exact date but the 9/11 attacks caused my uncle to get laid off from the RIO based on seniority since he was a janitor and helped keep the machines clean. it took around 6 months to find another job he ended up working as a prep person at a restaurant.

if his spot was just a few more up probably wouldn't of gotten cut.

I was only furloughed once, when I worked for the railroad. It ended up being for about a year and a half, but I had found a new job about a month into and I didnt return when they asked me to come back.

Twice.

Took 3 months to find a job the first time less than a year after high school.

Then second time I left a job for a different job. Second job didnt work out and I reached out to the last job to see if I could come back. Left me with 7 weeks of unemployment. Thats where I learned how much unemployment ducked (all the time to do things but no money, as opposed to some time to do things and some money)

I avoided layoffs during Covid. 90% of the entire staff was laid off for 3 months. The casino and restaurants were shut down but part of the hotel was still running so they needed a nighttime housekeeper in case something needed cleaned up and I lived the closest so I was kept on. Everyone else had to file unemployment for those months. I still got paid 40 hours a week even though I was really only working 25 to 30, and I use the term working loosely. I was being paid to sit there and play on my phone or DS waiting.

I'm so sorry dude.. I'm assuming you applied for unemployment. What field do you work in?

I remember back in 2021, it only took 2 months to land a job, and I had several panel interviews a month. I've been out 4.5 months, and I have yet to get a panel interview, and I was maybe averaging 1 interview with a manager a month. Haven't had any interviews since June though.

One bright side out of all of this is that, if your company starts hiring again... Companies like boomerang employees. Makes economical sense to bring back people who use to work and bring back up to speed in a few weeks to a month, instead of training a new employee from the get-go. I'm not relying on this with my current position but... Here's hoping we all get back.

I was laid off for 3 months back in 2016 or 2017. It was a temporary lay off though and I had an expected return date, so I just treated it like an extended vacation.

It was a nice break at first but got kinda boring after a while. The lack of money sucked too. I was collecting unemployment but it was only 2/3rds of my regular pay. The 1/3rd I was missing out on made up a huge portion of my "fun money".

3ish months around 2012. Basically fallout from 2008. The engineering firm I worked for at the time did a crapton of residential work which requires quite a bit more testing than commercial because you're taking multiple samples per lot in a neighborhood with maybe 100 lots as opposed to a skyscraper grocery store that has one lot. So as the housing bubble collapsed we lost most our work and they kept me on as long as they could even had me testing samples a different company sent us because we had a really nice lab but even that dried up so they let me go.

Silver lining that company that was sending us samples scooped me right up 3 months later lol.

i don't even feel like applying for jobs anymore. The only thing that's really keeping me going right now is exercising every day and talking to people. My ADHD is at it's worst. I make a list of things I want to get done everyday, but I feel so unmotivated. I feel like my medication isn't that effective for some reason.

You gotta keep applying. I found my current job by telling myself I had to keep looking and applying for another half hour that day. I certainly didn't want to at that point
