The Army Reserve Is Gutting Aviation Units. Thousands of Soldiers Are Being Left in the Lurch. | Military.com https://share.google/1wq4heexjSIpVV81z Thousands of Army Reserve soldiers are being forced to scramble for new assignments after the service abruptly ordered the dismantling of its helicopter units, a sweeping move that has caught commanders off guard and upended aviation operations across the country. The cuts, which are set to eliminate all of the reserve's helicopter units by the end of the summer, are part of Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George's broader push to modernize the force by shedding legacy formations and redirecting resources toward emerging technologies such as drones and artificial intelligence. Was actually talking with a couple of flight warrants about this earlier today, not this article but the Army moving away from Close Air Support/Attack Helicopters the primary reasoning seemed to be the unreliability or straight up inability to establish air superiority/dominance in the typical airspace that CAS/AHs operate in, almost entirely due to (commercial) drones being used in combat/disrupt air assets. This also doesn't mean that the US is going to just give up all of its birds, apparently the Marine Corps is interested in purchasing/co-opting the abandoned birds. --- The name is wackyteen for a reason. Umbreon posted... How much of the military supported Trump I wonder?i mean, fwiw, this course of action was inevitable and is based off analysis of the evolving battlefield. Primarily the war in Ukraine is the driving factor in this kind of decision. It is hard to justify these birds when joe blow with a quadcopter can yeet an explosive laden drone at a bird and down it. There are also other factors to consider, like how much money is routinely invested in keeping these platforms operable vs their viability in the next theater of operation the US may find itself in. CAS was great for anti-insurgent activity, especially in the fairly open terrain environments of Iraq and Afghanistan. --- The name is wackyteen for a reason. Never doubt. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Cacciato posted... Not that Im defending the decision, but the Reserve component is different than active duty. This is happening in Active Duty as well. Like i said above, it is mostly just about the lack of true viability in the modern battlefield and the costs associated with maintaining the birds. Parts for Aviation are a lot more rigorously tested and cost significantly more than off the shelf stuff. It's part of where the "$1 screw costs the Army $100" observation comes from. Yeah, the government routinely overpays but it isn't always without reason. Then you have very strict accountability of parts in/out for these birds and that turns, say, a quick 15 minute job into hour(s). Combine that with the training demands to even get maintainers qualified and the high turnover natural to the military ("I'm only here for my GI Bill") and it just becomes very expensive very fast to maintain assets that will have very limited or no major impact in the future. It sucks and it is sad but it's war at the end of the day. --- The name is wackyteen for a reason. Never doubt. ... Copied to Clipboard!
