Former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has condemned gerrymandering as truly evil after current office holder Gavin Newsom unveiled his redistricting plan.

In retaliation against President Donald Trumps push for aggressive partisan redistricting in Texas, Newsom said he aims to redraw Californias U.S. House maps before the 2026 midterm elections.

Now Schwarzenegger, the architect of Californias nonpartisan redistricting system, is preparing to campaign against Newsoms partisan gerrymandering proposal.

So what has he done to stop Republicans from gerrymandering?

Blue states like California believe in things like "fairness" and "not being evil", so campaigning against something like blatant partisan gerrymandering might actually go somewhere. And like, Schwarzenegger is correct - Gerrymandering is bull**** and should be condemned.

Texas is already the most gerrymandered state in the nation, and especially Texas has shown they'll gladly just like, be evil. So campaigning like this in Texas will go nowhere.

The problem is rather Arnold is seemingly unable to read the room, realizing that California's gerrymandering here is very obviously directly targeted, and fighting the response is basically just being pro-fascist takeover.

Or Arnold is aware, but given he's Austrian and has repeatedly spoken publicly about how bad the nazis were, maybe he's making a good-natured mistake.

He has long been against gerrymandering, he even went to the Supreme Court when North Carolina was being sued due to their efforts to eliminate Democrats in office. It's not surprising that when his state argues for it, he will still be opposed.

He hates Trump and opposes gerrymandering, not an unreasonable position but right now with all the reasonable options being closed off nows not the time to worry about that.

800k people died in the civil war. the vast majority of them on the south's side weren't slave owners. it wasn't good people killing evil people, it was dirt farmers killing each other over political and economical differences that barely effected them.

would you argue that the civil war was wrong?

arnold is being a high minded asshole here, making arguments that are only relevant when there's not a fundamental issue with the system in place. the republican party is doing its absolute best to break the legislature, and he's arguing that the only thing legally possible shouldn't be done because it looks bad for democrats? does he have an alternative?

I agree that partisan gerrymandering is bad, but when one side does it, countering with the same thing is just evening the playing field.

if he wanted to do something useful, instead of just being a loudmouth, he'd push for federal legislation enforcing fair district drawing. man has the money and the social media presence to make a push, it would absolutely die before going anywhere but at least it would be an attempt.
