I completed Clair Obscur a few days ago and now I don't have a single player game on the go.

I finally have a PC that can run most games, huzzah! Gimme some suggestions!

Note - I did start Blue Prince on Gamepass PC, so I could return to that... only put in like 3 runs before I got Clair Obscur and switched over.

Scrolling through the library, some titles that stand out:

  • Anno 1800: Very complex city builder/resource management game, absurdly beautiful. I suck at it but it's fun.
  • Control: Fantastic soundtrack and surreal story that intertwined real world events with a dark sci-fi fantasy world, also part of the Alan Wake universe.
  • Command & Conquer Remastered: Great remaster of both the original C&C and Red Alert and expansions. Stays true to the original games with some minor interface and hotkeys improvements. Lets you switch between modern and classic graphics on the fly, too.
  • Fallout 3, New Vegas, 4 and 76 (ok 76 is an online shared world experience but I liked it way more than 4 TBH)
  • Goat Simulator: What a video game should be. Dumb fun with a lot of stuff to explore and wacky physics to experiment with. Like a classic N64 or PS1 experience but with better graphics. I don't know if it comes with the expansions but they are entertaining parodies of other genres too.
  • Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: classic pause-style CRPGs with great writing and storytelling.
  • Quantum Break: Same devs as Control and Alan Wake, absurdly good storytelling with live action TV episodes in between acts that blur the line between fiction and reality. Gameplay is kinda average but the concept is awesome.
  • Rise of Nations: This is a classic RTS, runs great on modern systems. Like a combination of Civilization and Age of Empires but better than both imo. Base campaign is your standard take over the world fare, but then there are various historical campaigns like the Alexander the Great conquests and Cold War.
  • Sniper Elite Resistance: Actually haven't played this yet but the series overall is a very solid third person shooter/stealth series with some of the best sniping mechanics in the genre.
  • The Saboteur: Older GTA-style game where you play a resistance member in WW2 trying to liberate France. It has really cool visual design, where oppressed areas are dark and gray but areas that you've liberated are colorful and lively again.
  • Vampire Survivors
  • Watch Dogs 2: One of the best games in the genre, the world feels so friggin alive and there's a lot of ways to interact with it for fun. Like starting a gang war that ranges on down city blocks or just messing around with NPCs. Solid story too.

Balatro if you're looking for an insanely addicting game. You don't need to know poker to play it. Just what a Flush, Straight, Full House is, so don't let that stop ya.

Celeste if you'd like a high quality 2D platformer with a sweet story and good music. Gameplay is really tight and there are optional challenges throughout if you want 'em.

Control if you want a good 3rd person shooter with super powers and a good story. Very entertaining aesthetic and tone.

Donut Country if you feel like something short and sweet. Good lazy day game.

Dredge if you want a fishing game mixed with Lovercraftian horrors. The core gameplay is catching fish, managing your inventory space, upgrading your boat.

Firewatch if you're down for a well written and acted looker of a walking sim.

Inscryption if you want a weird card game that's a lot more than it seems at first.

Inside if you'd like a stylish 2D puzzle platformer that is all about creepy vibes.

Psychonauts 1 & 2 if you want a funny classic 3D platformer. First one's gameplay is a aged, but the comedy is still pretty great. Second plays a lot better and the writing is on par with the first.

Sea of Stars if you'd like a good ass modern old school JRPG.

Unpacking if you're after a short cozy game about unpacking stuff. It's partly a puzzle game and had a pretty good story going on in the background told in a unique way.

I'm in New Zealand so I dunno if the games available are the same as in Canada but here goes. The selection is pretty meh at the moment but there are some really good games.

Another Crab's Treasure is a pretty good souls clone. I really don't like how much hit-stop they put in it but it's generally pretty fun. It's harder than you'd expect from such a colorful and goofy game though.

Manor Lords is really fun, basically a lite version of a Total War game mixed with a very cool medieval sim city clone. It's still in early access after several years but it's very playable and very fun. Don't know if you like that kind of game but if you do it's fun. I usually don't like city builder type games because they tend to get really frustrating and/or boring at some point, but this one I can play over and over again without getting bored or frustrated. There's quite a bit learning curve but playing a few campaigns should get you skilled up.

Dead Island 2 is pretty great, pretty much the only game other than Dying Light that does first person melee combat well. It's basically Dying Light in LA.

Wasteland 2 and 3 and Gears Tactics are decent turn based tactics games if you are into that kind of thing.

Jedi Survivor is amazing if you haven't played it, best star wars game in my book. Fallen Order is pretty decent but man Survivor really knocks it out of the park. It will probably run like ass though.

Sunset Overdrive has been on there forever and you've probably played it. Very fun and goofy game, probably the funniest game I've ever played.

Shredder's Revenge is pretty fun if you haven't played it.

The Ascent is great just for the visuals. The story is really dumb and the combat is pretty dull but man the background visuals are just amazing.

Wartales...eh. It's interesting but tries too hard to do too many different things.

I second the recommendation of South of Midnight. Although with a warning that it's a sad game.

I also recommend Grounded and Grounded 2 if you're into survival crafting games. Fantastic games where you're shrunk down to the size of an insect and have to fight all kinds of hostile insects.

Is Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy still on there? Well worth a play, whether you've played the original versions or not. (If you're not a fan of 3D platformers but are a fan of 2D platformers, definitely give it a try. Crash is more like "2D platformer adapted to 3D" rather than a typical 3D platformer.)

I didnt start playing grounded until right before the final update and was genuinely blown away by it, I had just thought it was a colorful kids game

legitimately great game, and the wolf spiders were more frightening than any enemy I have seen in years. RE/Souls/dead space/whatever have nothing on them

I would play the first now instead of 2, I put 38 hours into 2 already >_> but it just entered early access and feels a bit barren after the years of updates 1 had.

It is still missing a lot of the equipment/items and even tech levels of 1, and there isnt just stuff everywhere yet, the only notable new thing added so far is a rideable ant and that isnt worth all the missing things.

( as an aside, I put ~10 hours into dredge and just couldnt get in to it I like chill games, but the gameplay loop just wasnt satisfying enough for me, which was odd because it seemed like something I would like)

Yeah I'm trying to hold off on playing 2 too much right now. I enjoy what I've played so far, but I know I'll be disappointed once I hit the end of the current content lol. Especially since we're limited to tier 2 equipment until the Winter update.

Yeah, I played Dredge because people compared it to stuff like Outer Wilds where you're putting together the story and stuff. And there is some of that, but it is actually just 98% fishing minigames tied together with a light Lovecraftian plot.

I tried grounded years ago around when it finally came out of early access and it seemed like a typical co-op game balanced for co-op but not for single player. Did they balance it out more? Seem to remember I kept getting knocked out and losing everything because I didn't have a co-op partner to revive me. It was a couple years ago and I didn't play it for long so I can't really remember clearly.

Got my first town in Manor Lords set up pretty well, just need the population to grow so my militia can grow. Town 2 is just starting to make weapons for its militia and town 3 is just starting out.

The last update was about a year ago, so a lot has changed

(I always play solo)

but I will say it is not the easy game a lot of people expect. Even on easy if you arent blocking and/or parrying you are going to die.

A 100% shield (heavy) is easy to get though, and I relied on that hard (plus arrow then staff cheese) until I got the parry timing down. Your build also matters, using set bonuses, mutations and trinkets correctly makes a huge difference.

My guy was a murder bot by the 50% point, but it took some work.

They also have custom difficulty now, so you can keep everything the same and just make it so you dont drop items when you die >_>

*besides that what you can do just keeps expanding, you can go from cowering in terror from damn near everything to having sky palaces with zip lines crisscrossing the sky and just jump off and float to wherever you want to go on your reusable parachute

So I hated Grounded the first time I tried it in early access because it felt overly hard. But I picked it up again earlier this year and had a blast. Completed the story solo.

I played on Mild (easy) and compared to normal difficulty, you do 25% more damage and take 50% less damage. You also only drop crafting resources on death, instead of everything in your inventory. So it's a lot more manageable solo. I was even able to kill the optional super boss solo, and I'm not a parry expert or anything

Yeah, I was playing on normal, and tbf you either had to parry or have a block stamina reduction build/chug smoothies for the very hard bosses

*also, because I have nowhere else to say this and I just stopped playing for the night I am not at all sure I am a fan of the changes in the last patch for grounded 2 that I just downloaded.

I think I like the color/lighting changes, though the grass seemed strange at first. They also did something really strange like reduce the magnitude of the terrain.

Patch notes said smoothing, and I though they meant surface shit, but no. All the drops/chasms arent as deep and all the rises arent as high.

there used to be a rift around the starting area and now the lips almost touch in the middle, where it used to be slightly difficult to jump a speeding buggy across

also all my storage/furniture is floating like 6 feet in the air, because the hill it was on is mostly gone a lot of stuff looks less impressive

I also started playing Dredge. I added to my wishlist after people in the Steam Summer Sale Giveaway topics hyped it up. But I didn't realize it was on Gamepass. Saves me a purchase.

Anyway, I googled that because I was also curious. No, the days do not matter. There are some optional quests where you have to bring specific fish to one npc within a certain timeframe, otherwise the fish die. That is the only time specific thing, and it doesn't lock you out of any achievements or story progression.
