The neighborhood group Im part of is like 50% finding loose dogs and people posting asking to lookout for their lost dog and think its quirky they get out all the time.

If your animals keeps getting out you should be fined severely.

Then last week Im mowing and some broad waves me down while holding a dog by the collar. She says she found the dog wandering while on a walk and wanted to put it in my fenced backyard then post on Facebook to find the owner.

She was incredulous I told her no.

People don't like to "restrain" their dog by using leashes or fencing them in. It's kind of bonkers. Admittedly when I was a kid our dogs usually weren't leashed or tied up in our yard, but we had a huge yard, no where near any busy roads. And one of our dogs still got hit by a car...in our own driveway.

Anyway, none of our dogs ever got lost, but we never let them out on their own. So many people in the small town I grew up in would have their dogs running free outside, in tiny ass yards, while they were in the house, oblivious to their dogs running into the road. Then if you were nice enough to let them know their dog got out, and was playing in traffic, they'd be like "Oh yeah, but he always comes home."

Morons.

People that don't own dogs probably don't lose them very often.

Let's just assume that people who own dogs are in two camps:
Dog lovers vs Dog is a tool

People who are dog lovers that end up having a run away will obviously report it. Those that only see a dog as a tool or "just an animal" would most likely gripe about it, and then just go to the pound to get a replacement.

I care more about the dogs temperament more than if they get loose occasionally. If theyre dick heads when theyre loose then I agree. But if its a chill dog I love getting a surprise visitor from a friendly pooper

Some dogs are poorly trained AND the people don't fence or kennel them. My cousin had a poorly trained dog that would often just run through the front door if it was open and eventually he got away and never came back.

It's the same way on every neighborhood social media page I've been on. So much bandwidth wasted on stupid people who can't contain their stupid mutts.

These animals, which are so vaunted as unwaveringly loyal companions, sure do seem to love running away the moment they see an open door or a gap in the fence.

I can't stand whenever a loose dog sprints up to us when I'm walking my dog. There's only been a handful of times where the dog was aggressive, but it always scares the shit out of my dog and it's just chaos. Control your fucking pets.

Yeah i do, its not my job to help manage a persons pet when they are a shitty owner. I care nothing for dogs, I dont like them.

I feel like a lot of pet owners I see on social media are unfortunately bad pet owners who only want to have an animal for vibes and aesthetic rather than acknowledging it is a responsibility

Accidents happen and animals get out. Calling anyone who has a pet get out a terrible pet owner is a terrible opinion to have.

Cats and dogs should be kept inside. However - A cat that is running around outside is never going to run up to someone and bite them. With an escape or free roaming dog you have zero idea if the dog is friendly or wants to start a fight.

no. they just spread fleas to neighbors yards, destroy their gardens with shit and piss, and murder all the birds in the neighborhood for fun. then they get run over or they go into the wrong yard and get mauled by a dog because they're stupid and a lot of drivers are assholes.

i've caught about a dozen loose dogs in my neighborhood, i call animal control and they get picked up and either returned to their owner or adopted out. and no, they dont get put down, i actually check in over the following days every time i do it.

i dont try catching cats, because animal control doesn't take them since its such a common thing for owners to just let the little bastards free roam. and then i notice flyers for those missing cats on a pole a week later, or even worse i see them run over in the street.

Irresponsible owners aside, a lot of dog breeds are really good at escaping if they want to. Like when our akita was a puppy she climbed over our 8 foot tall wooden fence to go run down a squirrel.

used to have a basset hound, if he was left unattended he'd dig under a fence.

but he loved to chase squirrels, not catch them, just chase them. he cornered one once and just stood about 4 feet from it barking until i pulled him back and it could run away. he'd get pissed off when he saw them running across power lines and would yell at them, one time one was surprised enough to fall off the line right in front of him and he froze because he couldn't understand what the hell was happening.
