He was definitely a top tier one. The other one from my era would be Jim Henson. He might not have been on the screen as himself and as direct into the camera as Fred Rogers but with Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, Fraggle Rock, Muppet Babies, and the movies and other things he was involved in yeah he had a big and positive influence.

Bob Ross was another even though I'm not artistic and it was a singular activity like painting. The guy was just wholesome and calming. I'm sure if I sat here I could come up with a list of names but yeah no arguing against Fred Rogers.

I loved reading that Fred Rogers was really hard to interview, because he'd always ask the interviewer questions and try to get to know them.

Definitely A-tier. There were others that I felt were as good as him, though. Bob Homme (The Friendly Giant) and Ernie Coombs (Mr. Dressup - who, as it turns out, understudied Fred Rogers [Mr. Dressup actually predated the Mr. Rogers show by one year] and was good friends with him) all come to mind.

Probably.

The Mount Rushmore of role models to young boys of that era was Rogers, Bob Ross, Steve Irwin, and probably Carl Sagan. So of those, I give it to Fred.

In middle school we all got selected random celebrities to write 'things they did good and things they did bad' and a small biography on them. I got Mr. Rodgers at random.

I remember saying that there is pretty much nothing he did as an adult in his public life I could qualify as generally 'bad', and the teacher took like half credit off my shit for 'not following directions'.

I clearly listened to the instructions and wrote in it why I wrote what I did. Asshole teacher lol.

No, she was a cranky old bitch. I just lost points and she was hearing nothing about it. I 'didn't follow the directions' by saying he didn't do anything bad.

Maybe my least favorite teacher in my entire life.

He was an advocate of child education and treating children with respect. He was willing to discuss serious topics to help young children understand them, Kennedy assassination, 9/11, Vietnam War, etc. Also, at a time when black people where banned from being able to swim in a pool with white people he invited a black person on to share a kiddie pool and even using the same towel. He also played a massive role in keeping PBS funding going, Nixon wanted to cut it's funding by $10M and Rogers testimony to Congress has been pointed to being the main reason the funding wasn't cut.

And sadly we currently lack a figurehead with the sensibility of Fred Rogers to speak out in support of educational public television during this fascist takeover.

Also, to the folks bringing up his religiosity: I'm no lover of religion - I can sometimes be downright spiteful when talking about it - but Rogers' expression of his faith came through his kind ways and words. He never invoked scripture or pushed a particular faith-based narrative. He's a rare figure whose approach to being "Christ like" was, as he put it, "caring about our neighbors at least as much as we care about ourselves." And he left it at that.
