He was basically the best Jedi you could be under their code, for better or worse.

He was fully aware of the relationship Anakin and Palpatine had, but put absolutely zero thought into how Anakin would react if he tried to extra-judicially murder Palpatine in front of him.

Would be a bad sign if that guy was a head of any order.

he was a dumbass. his response to "the dude running the whole government with full control of the military is a sith" was to storm the building? there was no thought involved, just "guess i'm doing a bit of a coup today!"

but keep in mind this was by design. palps had been manipulating the whole jedi council for years, and windu's whole gung-ho mentality when the truth came out was part of that plan. that plus he had yoda, a much calmer mind, off planet intentionally.

The only thing Anakin did was point out the threat was even worse than they feared (they though he might be under the influence of the Sith Lord, but did not consider that he might actually be the Sith Lord.)

Considering the novel of the movie confirms Mace couldn't defeat Palaptine, I guess this is a fair answer.

no. that wasn't a loss. if you read the book mace makes it pretty obvious that he wasn't winning that fight. palps decided to play possum when he knew anakin was going to arrive, had to sell the idea that his 'friend' who might know the only way to save his wife was about to be killed. had anakin not shown up palps wouldn't have thrown the fight and mace would have eventually died.

thing is he pointed it out to the worst person. mace had been turning more and more militant, all by design, and was only going to react one way.

maces whole style is designed to beat dark side users, but not someone of palps level. hell, mace got beaten by his brother who had no official training during the early part of the clone wars purely because he was stronger in the force then mace.

that's a misquote, he talks about the fight at minute 31. he's describing the scene and some people on the internet took it to mean that mace actually won.

he was wrong from the start about anakin, and their whole focus on the jedi code was a major reason for his fall. if the jedi weren't so shit at being people they'd have realized anakins problems well before ep2.

He needed a therapist and they wouldnt give him one.

When he was going to execute Palpatine he did a giant arcing sword swing to strike down at him, giving Anakin crazy amount of time to see it and react from the visual shock.

He was using a lasersword. A fast jab poke would have done the same damage, if not more. He did it only because he thought it made him look cool.

Back to the main point;

Yes I think he was a bad Jedi. It's one thing to know how to use the Dark Forces but it's another to keep using it at his convenience. Also, like most other Jedi, he's too arrogant and that blinds him from doing what's right.

Me too. I always thought that Windu was essentially the best Jedi combat-wise around that time because of that.

Palpatine throwing that match and betting on Anakin to be at his side sounded too risky for me.

I liked Kyle Katarn's take on the Force. There are no light or dark side powers, its just the Force. How you use those powers makes you good or bad.

Mace - he's too dangerous to leave alive!

Anakin - he must stand trial!

Mace - ok fine, but tell me how we arrest a guy that shoots lightning out his hands?

Anakin - I could chop his hands off.

Palpatine - What?

Mace - Do it!

Palps didn't throw. It was still a challenge and he didn't seek to be scarred.

And while people joke that disarming would effective, maybe only to a point. We're talking about someone who could remotely manipulate the force.

One thing interesting to note is that in Jedi Academy, you could pick whatever force power and this won't impact the story at all.

I could pick all Jedi powers and still go for the Dark Side, on the same time I could pick all Dark Side powers and still go for the Light side.

So it is kinda amusing seeing Kyle and Luke constantly tells you to be careful for picking Sith powers all the time and in the end being the good guy, or being praised for your focus and discipline only to backstab them all later.

I only played Jedi Academy, but it was basically divided between Offensive and Defensive/Utility powers anyway. I don't remember a single Light Side power that directly dealt damage.

If I blast them with a non-lethal dose of force lightning and the hostages get to leave, thats still treated as a dark side power.

Don't remember where it came from but one explanation was that dark side powers are dark side because they require the user to dip into anger and all the "unhealthy" emotions to kind of manipulate the force into an unnatural state. Continued use is similar to an addict getting their fix.
