President Trump indicated on Monday that he could move soon to rename the Department of Defense as the Department of War.

Pete Hegseth has been incredible with the, as I call it, the Department of War. You know, we call it the Department of Defense, but between us, I think were going to change the name, Trump said during a meeting with South Koreas president.

You want to know the truth, I think were going to have some information on that maybe soon, he added.

Trump argued it was called the Department of War during U.S. victories in World War I and World War II.

Defense is a part of that, Trump said. But I have a feeling were going to be changing. Everybody likes that. We had an unbelievable history of victory when it was Department of War.

Apparently at least some party of his mushy brain holds the thought that renaming the Department of Defense will lead to more military successes.

I mean, the main reason we or any other global power label their war branch as 'defense' is kind of a sick-joke attempt at plausible deniability; "oh, we'd never hit a country unless they hit us first, we promise!"

So Trump throwing up a giant middle finger to any attempt at subtlety is about as on-brand as it gets.

I'm in favor of this. It's what it used to be called before the 50's and it is much, MUCH more honest about its actual purpose. I'd support a law making it impossible to rename it.

I imagine many who support this falsely believe a change in name is inconsequential.

Just to update the name alone would require a lot of man power. 100s and 100s of documents we already dont have the manpower to do normal everyday duties...... now deviating time on something so pointless.

This is yet another pointless action and a waste of tax dollars.

While more honest, i imagine this goes nowhere specifically because the defense contractors would much prefer to say they work in the defense industry than the war industry, especially if there is no war going on.

I imagine there'd be plenty of chuds lining up to be war contractors and thinking they're the next Lord of War.

call it department of war would make it much more reasonable to defund them when we're not at war right? though i guess the counter argument to that is we'll just always be at war...

Before the 50s it was the Department of War and the Department of the Navy.

It wasn't just a renaming, it was a reorganization of the whole complex.

Yeah Ive actually been saying this way before Trump entered the picture. Department of defense is a misleading name. Bombing civilians in the Middle East is not defense.

Of course, Trump is doing it for the wrong reasons though. He sees war as a good thing.

Quite. This would be the first, and almost certainly the last, case of Trump actually being more honest than any other president of the past 70+ years (not that honesty has anything to do with his motivation for doing it).

Hell, the Army introduced a new service uniform, the Army Green Service Uniform, in 2020 and it isn't mandatory to own it until October 1st, 2027.

While, yes, a uniform is different than a name change, the amount of time and resources to properly implement would take years.

Why not just change the name of the White House to War House?

That's true, there are Navy uniforms that are perpetually out of stock or low on stock and I'm pretty sure that's why they haven't made certain things mandatory to own

considering how many things say "DoD" or "Department of Defense" on them then yeah changing all that around would take either a long time or a ton of money

though it would be hilarious if something small like ID cards would hold this up because the contractor who made the code to print them made it too hard to change or the contract stands for another 10 years and there's no provisions to change the text

TBf the previous uniform was dark blue pants and light blue shirt. Though at least you could get away with all sorts of boots for that one. And blue coveralls are (or were at least) a thing.

I did hate how they rolled out the lightweight version of the blue uniform like two months before announcing everyone was just gonna go to the greens tho
