I remember in my elementary school we were taught that any 2D map of the earth's surface is necessarily going to be distorted in some way and we were shown other types of maps, but I don't know if that's true everywhere. The Mercator map isn't bad but it's important to understand that it doesn't represent the relative sizes of landmasses accurately. --- "It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. Zikten posted... I actually didn't know that. But it makes sense with the history of racismThis is actually a myth. The Mercator map was designed and popularized because it's useful for navigation. Maps that more accurately represent Africa's size existed at the same time, they just were less practical. There is no way to represent the Earth correctly on a 2D map. Any projection will be inaccurate, and any method will have tradeoffs. You can't peel an orange and make it into a flat sheet of peel, and you can't do the same for the earth's surface without distorting the continent's shapes or relative sizes. Mercator isn't really "wrong"; its intended purpose was to aid sea navigation, and anything you might to do improve its accuracy in representing the shape or size of countries would make it less useful for that purpose. In any event, the Robinson model is, I think, a pretty good compromise for visualizing the earth's layout. --- http://thecrankyhermit.shoutwiki.com Year-by-year analysis of the finest gaming has to offer, and (eventually) more! ... El_Marsh posted... I never would have guessed that a geographic model from the 16th century was incorrectIt's not "incorrect" per se it's just that when you try to flatten the surface of a sphere into a rectangular piece of paper, some deformity must occur. The Mercator projection was designed to deform in such a way that drawing straight lines across the ocean and then trying to follow them will actually lead you to your destination. They're all going to be off in some way. How much that matters depends on what you're using it for. Best for students to see several different views of the world and help them to understand none of them are completely right (except, as you said, a globe). --- "It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. Mercator is still useful even today. Basically every online mapping software uses a variant of the Mercator projection because it preserves local shapes and angles, scales seamlessly as you zoom, and loads quickly because the math is simpler than other projections. The racism stuff is hogwash and only took off in the '70s when Arno Peters started telling lies to promote his terrible, horrible projection, which he had stolen from another projection a century earlier that everyone had ignored. --- http://i.imgur.com/VeNBg.gif http://i.imgur.com/gd5jC8q.gif http://i.imgur.com/PKIy7.gif http://i.imgur.com/3p29JqP.gif ...
