Its pretty extraordinary how willing the Israelis are to throw themselves off a cliff just to keep Benjamin Netanyahu out of prison.

TBH the bigger headline there should be the PM (who according to polls wouldn't even be in power without abusing wartime powers and thus doesn't have the mandate of the people any longer) is now declaring Israel is the modern-day Sparta.

Yet another sign Neyanyahu has completely lost his mind and sanity, such as it was to begin with.

The Tel Aviv Stock Exchanges benchmark TA-125 index drops 1.8%. The TA-35 index of blue-chip companies falls 1.6%, while the TA-90 index, which tracks the shares with the highest capitalization not included in the TA-35 index, declines 2.3%. The TA-Insurance index dives 2.9%.

That's it?

Bibi thinks he has the political capital to last another year. He doesn't. He simply has the minority coalition votes to prevent a government collapse. And that probably ends the moment there's any finality to the Gaza situation. There's no incentive to end it, or at least not without starting the West Bank annexation that he and Rubio are plotting.

Israel itself is ready to move on and elect a Bennett-lead coalition again.

Weird. It's almost like putting authoritarian shitheads in positions of power is a really stupid and self-destructive idea or something, no matter how much the authoritarian shitheads in question claim they'll fix the economy, make the trains run on time, and/or make Insert-Country-Here great again if you put them in charge.

I'm pretty sure the Israelis will turf Netanyahu as soon as they're able to do so.

Hell, that's half the reason *why* the Gaza genocide is continuing and Israel is deliberately sabotaging peace efforts by bombing(!!) the country hosting them.

Netanyahu knows that the instant the war ends, so too does his government and his ability to stay out of prison. His extremist partners are content to support him, because they're getting the ability to slaughter Palestinians that they've wanted for decades.

The sad reality is "The economy is doing badly" doesn't mean the same thing it used to when the rich old men on top still have everything they want

So nothing changes.

"Falling off economically" is not a very precise way to describe what happened which is that stock investors reacted negatively to Netanyahu suggesting need for further self sufficiency within Israel instead of ending the Gaza war to maintain international relationships. autarky isn't good for the market

Not to derail, but have you seen Trump supporters? For people who claim to go on about "muh patriotism" they sure love joining Trump on the highway express to doom the country. So much that these people voted in a guy to fix the economy..... who openly campaigned promises that directly screwed them over.... and they still support him.

My point? Lyndon Johnson quote: "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you."

Sadly in case of this topic and, replace "white" with specifically racist "Israelis"; replace "colored man" with "Palestinian."
