If it wasn't for the highly competitive job market, lower salaries, and bad work culture, it would be straight up better than the US in everything. It's also natural disaster prone which is a negative (earthquakes and hurricanes), but certain places in the US are too. Amazing public transportation, hyper safe both during the day and night, beautiful with a lot of natural and cultural sights to see, very nice and respectful people, great nightlife, booze is really cheap and isn't grossly up charged everywhere like it is in the US, solid nightlife, practically zero fat chicks, etc. Cheaper than the US at this point too. If I ever make enough to retire and it hasn't changed too much by then, it's under heavy consideration for a retirement spot. From my experience, the only really hyper touristy city is Kyoto. Tokyo and Osaka isn't drowning with foreigners at all unless you're going to a hyper touristy spot that locals would never want to go too. --- Sanity is a one trick pony, all you get with it is rational thought, but with crazy the sky's the limit. ... MajesticFerret posted... If it wasn't for the highly competitive job market, lower salaries, and bad work culture, it would be straight up better than the US in everything. Highly competitive? It's the opposite. There's more jobs than people to fill them and it's almost impossible to get fired. Salaries are lower though. Work culture really depends on what aspects you value. A lot of people also base that on memes and not the reality for most jobs here (Japanese workers work less hours on average than the US, and about the same as OECD average, if you want insane work hours, you want South Korea). I think the cost of living somewhat balances out the low salaries and the real part that is hard compared to the US is the cultural expectations. If you don't want to behave in the way Japanese people expect you to behave, you are going to have a very bad time, and not just at work. --- Favorite Games: BlazBlue: Central Fiction, Street Fighter III: Third Strike, Bayonetta, Bloodborne thats a username you habe - chuckyhacksss ... EpicMickeyDrew posted... Tell me what you usually do and ill just do that Mostly bar and restaurant hopping. We always stay in the Gracery Shinjuku which is right in the red light district, so lots of bars and restaurants about. Particularly enjoy evenings in the Golden Gai. Sometimes well check out a temple or just go for a wander and see what crazy shit we can see. Have done day trips to Fuji and national parks and stuff like that. Normally go to Akihabara for an big electronics shop. Theres a place near the base of the sky tree that sells the nicest strawberries Ive ever tasted. Theyre about $20 per strawberry but totally worth it. Been to see the sumo wrestling. The ninja restaurant is gimmicky as hell but also actually does genuinely good food. But mostly, we just explore. Theres so much to see that it can be fun to just pick a direction and start walking, and stop whenever you see something you want to check out. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Kyoto and Osaka also have their fair share of tourists. I think Kyoto and Osaka are among the top 3 prefectures most people know of (alongside Tokyo) when they are asked about Japan. Actually quite a surprise too considering Kyoto and Osaka are nowhere near Tokyo. The two are separated from Tokyo by the entire Chubu region. As I always say If you stay in Tokyo, you are only seeing a very specific type of Japan. Everything outside of Tokyo is different. Kyoto has been ruined by tourism. It is packed full of tourists. Everything has been watered down for tourists. Its sad. If you wanna do weeb anime stuff, yeah Tokyo is it. If you want cultural stuff plus modern society, maybe Nagoya or Osaka. I was there in April. Depends entirely on what you consider "good".(the below applies to tokyo/kyoto) If you like being the centre of attention = X If you're hoping to be a handsome white guy attracting asian girls with your whiteness = X If you're hoping for a cheap holiday = X If you like having lots of space around you = X Your idea of a holiday is peace and quiet and sipping a drink on the beach = X On the other hand Do you like food? Do you like cheap food and drink that is better than your local expensive food and drink? Do you like culture and art and style and anime Do you like hustle and bustle and people watching Do you like polite considerate people Do you like feeling weirdly safe in a city (in the daytime, at least) Do you want to see the sumo, ghibli museum, nintendo and other japanese tihngs Do you like buddhist temples Do you want to go somewhere that is very unlike anywhere else in the world It has all that in spades --- CE's Resident Scotsman. http://i.imgur.com/ILz2ZbV.jpg ... Glob posted... Mostly I agree but it can be a cheap holiday. Maybe, but would you want it to be? To me people seem to go to japan to experience the culture and food and things like that, and to do that properly you need to set aside some cash. All up for 10 days in decent accommodation, flights paid for, tickets to various events and shows and the bullet train and not having to think about money while not blowing it on silly stuff, I think I spent $4k. --- CE's Resident Scotsman. http://i.imgur.com/ILz2ZbV.jpg ... No, but I dont really look to do holidays on a budget. Theyre my biggest extravagance by far. But if you stay somewhere less central, accommodation becomes a lot cheaper, no? And the trains are good enough that thats fairly feasible, I would imagine. And while you can spend a fortune on food and drink, some of the best meals Ive had over there have been very cheap.
