Anyone who believes US checks and balances mean a damn thing in the face of overwhelming Republican bad faith is severely delusional.

Here's a chilling example -- the only thing that's stopping Trump from ordering ICE or the US military to murder anyone he doesn't like (Fauci, Biden, AOC, etc.) is the risk such an order would not be obeyed.

And Republicans are doing everything they can to decrease that risk.

I defy anyone to point out one single political or legal bad consequence to Trump if he were to actually do that (and the order was obeyed). Since there are no consequences in this hypothetical, there are no checks and balances.

Honestly I don't remember any of his supporters suggesting checks and balances would keep him in line, most of the ones I spoke with were just openly racist and sexist.

I do think if Trump started ordering the military to openly murder civilians in cold blood that the majority of people would demand action, but I wouldn't even call that an example of checks and balances.

The "checks and balances" crap is coming from moderates/centrists and some dimwitted Democrats. Republicans have absolutely no use for checks and balances these days.

And if Trump were to have a political opponent murdered, what would really change, especially if some kind of bullshit is put out to "justify" it? Republicans would be in favor, the morons in the middle would be like "yeah, whatever", and Democrats would be outraged. I.e., just like any other day ending in -y.

After all, ongoing Trump ICE operations already have a death toll of people in custody, and that's only going to increase.

I think footage of the US military opening fire on civilians would make the morons in the middle wake up, and maybe a handful of Republicans (if the people they shot were white). That is a level of escalation that would, I hope at least buts do think, would make people too uncomfortable to put it out of mind.

Protesters aren't peaceniks with signs anymore in their heads. They're a bunch of brown people of every shade waiting to destroy homes and businesses and need to be fought against.

I've seen more than one borderline white supremacist maga dude praising and wanting to be a rooftop Korean. Any other day of the week, and they'd probably call them Chinese. But when it means authorizing force against someone they don't like...

It is still true. Trump still didn't get 50 percent of the vote and lots of the votes were people tricked into thinking he would be better for the economy. They voted with their wallets.

Trump literally campaigned on everything he said he was going to do, so the thought that Trump "tricked" people into voting against their interests is absurd.

Sure, some people are so stupid that they can actually be tricked this way. But it's a pretty damn small fraction of the electorate, since otherwise there would be reports of mass drownings in every rainstorm because of stupid people looking up at the sky and somehow managing to drown themselves.

It's not sarcasm. It's an excess of hope. Since the only good thing that can be said about federal troops in DC is that they did some park cleanup, that's what they focus on, to the exclusion of everything else.

In Los Angeles the troops were confined to like a few city blocks/around federal buildings.

Outside of some aggressive acts against fully self-driving taxis the first weekend (before the deployment) that didn't result in any injuries to anyone except the taxi company's pride, the protestors were generally peaceful. The protesting itself was located within a really small (like three) city block range. The community came together and grilled up tacos, hot dogs, etc. and there were some bands performing live music and people dancing in the street.

The most violent moments came from police launching tear gas against the protestors.

I don't even think it was that in DC. Just a lot of scared residents staying off the streets. And NG cleaning up parks.

A senior White House official accidentally leaked details of plans to send an elite army unit to Portland, in the latest intelligence leak by the Trump administration.

Anthony Salisbury, a top deputy to Stephen Miller, the influential White House policy adviser, was observed using Signal in a public place to discuss a plan to deploy the armys 82nd airborne division to Portland, the Democratic-run Oregon city which Donald Trump has repeatedly castigated as being war-ravaged.

The Minnesota Star Tribune obtained images of Salisburys Signal messages, which it said were sent while the official was in clear view of others in Minnesota.

In the messages, sent last weekend, Salisbury chatted with Patrick Weaver, a senior adviser to the US defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, and other high-ranking federal officials, the Star Tribune reported.

Weaver wrote that Hegseth wanted Trump to expressly tell him to send troops to Portland.

Between you and I, I think Pete just wants the top cover from the boss if anything goes sideways with the troops there, Weaver said. He wrote that Hegseth would prefer to send in the national guard due to potential backlash over using the army.

82nd is like our top tier [quick reaction force] for abroad. So it will cause a lot of headlines, he added. Probably why he wants potus [Trump] to tell him to do it.

The 82nd airborne division is an elite unit that specialises in parachute assaults and forcible entry operations. It was deployed in both world wars and the wars in Vietnam and Afghanistan. A recent commander was the last American soldier to withdraw from Afghanistan in 2021.

Let's set aside yet another egregious breach in security for this administration and focus instead on the fact that these guys wanted to send an elite paratrooper unit into a US city to tear down homeless camps and pick up garbage.
