I took a break from back squats for 8 months to focus on strongman training, where front squats are more useful. I just started doing regular squats again and my strength on them is way down but climbing back up. I did 450 for a single this week and it felt smooth.

If your knees or back are preventing you from squatting, I wouldn't just abandon the attempt entirely. Even if you have no interest in squatting heavy, it's good if your body is healthy enough to be capable of it. Look into rehab options via kneesovertoesguy for knees and Dr. Stuart McGill's books for your back. Again, not advocating you squat if it causes you pain or if you don't care to, just saying rehab your body AS IF you want to so you set a high standard for it.
