OP Impression

there have been shows in the past where i let the OP play through every ep (this was more typical if i was watching weekly/airing shows) and also shows where even if i didn't watch the ED, i would at least let it play in the background while i browsed something online because it was a real comfort. i skip the OP/ED 95% of the time these days when i watch and it seems to be a mix of both the song itself failing to catch my attention and my general growing impatience as i get older and it's been a while since i've seen an OP i felt compelled to watch more than once.

ok i say that but i remembered Kokkoku OP which was not that long ago! maybe two weeks or so since i finished that. (edit: it has actually been about 3 and a half weeks)

after the DDDDD OP finished, i switched tabs to write this to give a little context but then i forgot what the OP sounded like. i think there were some interesting shots in it like the cube and the real(?) locations so maybe we will see what all that's about

English Speaking Character Appearance - very surprised at how not bad this sounded considering the level of performance from in-universe "fluent" english-speaking characters

Dedede ep 1 beated

i'm kind of falling asleeep as i type this and will prob rewatch at least a bit of the late half of the ep tomorrow before i watch ep 2

not cuz the ep was bad/boring but i just started feeling really tired around the halfway point. i'm not going to read synopsis of anything before i watch since i like going in as blind as possible. but from what i gathered, aliens invaded but rather than actual combat. their ship just stayed in the air. MENACINGLY.

it was in fact, our own actions that destroyed us (whoa deep). in trying to take down the alien ship that took no action, the US air force instead brought calamity upon the rest of the earth.

3 years later, it is now up to our main characters - a group of grade schoolers to investigate this alien threat. perhaps they will fall to the allure of the destructive power that awaits them

I tried reading Dedede but it's not just for me.

Also Delicious in the Dungeon and Dungeon Meshi are the same anime.

Dark Gathering is horror (at least mostly). I haven't watched it but Housing Complex C is also horror. At a glance, I'm not seeing any other horror on this list.

Shiki is a great anime too and worth a watch.

this character has a butt face

ok so rewatching the last part of ep1 that i don't remember at all.

this girl is driving. they're all in high school. she has a bad relationship with her mom. and then huge reveal at the end where one spaceship crashed and apparently two aliens(?) died.

ep. 2

contained some scenes explaining more about the MC. her relationship with her best friend, her crush on her teacher. also introduces her best friend's brother who is honestly kind of grotesque to look at. but this show is very clearly not concerned with having good-looking characters.

if i was watching regularly, this is about where i would be tempted to drop the series. i can tell it's setting up for some big reveals, but i just would not be patient enough and there hasn't been any standout aspects of the show yet (animation, character design, etc.) that would have kept me interested enough on that front to push through until the reveals came. feels like i would have rather watched steins;gate.

anyway finished d5 ep3 last night but knocked out soon after

it introduced the "handsome boy" character who is one of the aliens. there was a pretty cool shot of him with his face split up and rearranged which is the kind of shit i like to see in anime - basically things that we can see BECAUSE it's in animation.

by the end i was getting the vibes that this was going to end up with our MC group meeting up with him and teach him about humanity - and then whoa they're not so different from us after all.

thought about dropping but figured i might as well give it another ep

so i finished ep 4 this morning.

lot of development - one of the main group fucking dies - i didn't realize it at first because it's from a news broadcast and i hadn't gotten down all the names yet. i did like the scene where Oran is acting like her usual happy-go-lucky self while the other three are depressed and then the "reveal" is that Oran knew all along. because like what the fuck else are you supposed to do. so it goes.

i think both times where they fire the laser beam at the spaceship they show a shot of what looks like a playstation controller so that's pretty telling. something called "Shifters" are introduced at the end of ep 4 and i think Oran utters what i think is supposed to be one of the themes of the show: "Humanity is disgusting."

i can see it being a fine show. i'll be dropping now.

btw i'll mention this now that if i drop a show i could still see it being a 6 or 7/10 which are GOOD scores. but i'm searching for the 8s and above. is it possible that something i drop could have been an 8? of course but when i look back on everything i scored 8 or higher, i was grabbed way earlier so you do get the 'feeling' that something could potentially be one of those sooner rather than later. i actually do not vibe with the 'it gets really good after 10 episodes bro' sentiment at all

something like Steins;Gate which people often cite as being slow or one of those shows that they couldn't get into until later/the twist but like those characters were already interesting - especially Okabe - from the beginning.

so my top 3 has been Haruhi/Code Geass/Steins;Gate for the longest time. and they all have super interesting MCs to watch for me so even if the plots in those were slower-moving, the characters would have kept me engaged enough to watch more and more until i ended up eventually finished the show.

anyway this is to say that chances are high that i don't finish the show you nominated. sorry in advance!

i decided not to include Jojo in the randomizer for now because it's the longest series by far and i've seen 6 eps already. i might just go on a jojo binge at the end. was debating whether to include psycho pass and paranoia agent as well in the randomizer since i've seen them but decided eh whatever i will

first time in years i've seen the OP (had forgotten what it was) but that was pretty good! just a good amount of unsettling with the yodeling in the backgrounddd

rewatched 3 eps of Paranoia Agent and each episode was better than the last. the third one was my favorite out of the batch because it was most similar to Perfect Blue in terms of characters but it's a good opening batch to a good series. it does the blurring of fantasy/reality well like most of Kon's works and animation as a medium is really able to do some cool things with the concept

really cool show. but that's enough for me here

this also made me realize that i may have overestimated my ability to rewatch something. there's just something at the back of my brain that's saying "yeah but you could be doing something new instead" and i probably should have just taken off everything i've already watched. sorry to everyone who believed in me. gomenasai b8-kun. but i promise you this. i will finish at least 1 (ONE) anime from this list. if that ends up being the last show picked by randomizer by process of elimination, so be it. we WILL defeat anime together.

tbh the historical aspect doesn't really interest me too much. and from a character design perspective, i prefer Fate or Drifters. my first experience with this trend was Samurai Deeper Kyo tho.

that being said, it's watchable enough. got some action and watchable (so far) characters as well as a touch of goofiness so we'll see how far we get here

just realised i should probably clarify for wixoss, "selector infected WIXOSS" is s1 ("selector spread WIXOSS" is s2 and "selector destructed WIXOSS" is the movie). anything past that is basically a fully optional watch lol
