Yea the move to paid subscriptions and matchmaking was terrible. My only fond memories of console matchmaking would be from Overwatch. Private servers on PC was gaming bliss for me and MS actively worked against that model.

But other than that Id say Xbox wasnt so bad. The 360 made me realize indie gaming was an actual thing. To this day Braid is my goty

I'd argue the ps2 is more responsible for dude bros. It was heavily marketed as the "kewl" console.

There was some of that for sure (lots of my friends back then moved on from the Dreamcast to play Madden and Grand Theft Auto), but I wouldn't say more than Xbox. The PS2 had a great mix of mainstream Western games and more niche Japanese titles.

I disagree, and especially on the dude bro thing.

That type of culture was already deeply engrained in our day to day life in general. Forget video games, MTV for example merely existing kept that type of culture alive and strong.

Xbox being a online shooter mountain dew box may be a meme but it was no different for the online games that existed on the PS2 (especially socom 2) and the PC (especially games like unreal tournament and quake 3 arena. Voice chat was non-existent for that era of PC online gaming, but that didn't do a thing to stop the usual insults from simply being typed out to you. Since its the 90s and early 2000s you can forget any kind of filtering).

Especially when you consider that games like CoD were on both systems. The 360 had built in party chat and packaged mics in their consoles. The PS3 had neither of those things. If you wanted to play multiplayer games, the 360 was the system for it at the time.

Yeah, that is the biggest advantage the original xbox and xbox 360 had. It just made being able to voice chat way more convenient since mics came bundled in with the console itself or any starter xbox live pre-paid card you can buy that came bundled with that mic.

The main things the xbox made popular that spread everywhere else was voice chat, and matchmaking. (Since the style for every other shooter on the PC, dreamcast and PS2 at the time was just picking a server/room and going from there). Everything else was already in place.

The culture in general though already existed.....the xbox just made it easier to link up with the dude bros the world over, lol.
