Another October, another Resident Evil.

In 2018 I played the original PS1 versions of Resident Evil 1, 2 & 3.

In 2019 I played Code Veronica X, REmake & Zero. REmake becoming one of my favorite games and I still view it as a masterpiece.

In 2020 I played Resident Evil 4. Another masterpiece.

In 2022 I replayed 4 on the Wii and played Umbrella Chronicles, 5, Darkside Chronicles & Revelations.

In 2023 I played 6, Revelations 2 and 7 in VR which was incredible.

In 2024 I replayed 2 & 3 and played 2make & 3make.

Now in 2025 I'm playing 8 and 4make. I'll finally be officially caught up with all of Resident Evil. (Unless I play like...Dead Aim or Survivor. Not playing Umbrella Corps).

My rankings change around a lot, especially with the top 3 games, but right now I'm feeling:

Since I played 7 in VR and it was one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had, especially for a horror game, I've decided to make an irresponsible purchase of a PSVR2, pretty much just so I can play 8 in VR on my first time through. I'll be playing 4make later this month standard and probably play the VR version of it next year.

All I know about 8 since I've done my best to avoid spoilers is "vampires?", Chris is a werewolf based on the boxart? and big lady. So please no spoilers.

Setting up the PSVR2 for the first time. Nice not having to rely on a camera. Shame it's not wireless though. Apparently the DLC isn't available in VR mode which is disappointing. I enjoyed 7's DLC in VR and only one piece was missing iirc. So I guess I'll have to jump to standard mode for that.

Also kind of weird that saves and trophies don't transfer from the normal mode and the VR mode it seems? Not a huge deal, but odd there's an added limitation that 7 didn't have. Guessing it's because the VR was added later on and it has to be treated as its own separate thing for this.

Starting the tutorial and wow. I was not expecting this to be so...VR focused. RE7 was a game that was in VR, but this is like a VR game first. Aiming with the guns at the shooting range is pretty damn fun. Can ever flip the gun and catch it for trick shots. Popping the clips and reloading is gonna make fights a hell of a lot harder I imagine. Also feels weird having to reach up for a first aid bottle. Like that you have to pop the top though and pour it all over yourself. And finally the flashlight's real nice feeling.

Did the opening. Walked around Ethan's house and checked everything out. Was pretty shocked at Mia getting lit up like that. Game does throw me off a lot when in a cutscene and Ethan's sitting or on the ground.

Chris looking drunk again. What would Piers say? So my babe is infected I'm guessing and they went about taking her in the worst way possible. Maybe Mia was too far gone or doing more dirt behind my back? Otherwise not sure why kill her, but not me.

I might switch to sitting down for this. It's gonna get tiring.

Beefed up wolf lookin' boys. First one absolutely kicked my ass. Having difficult moving and shooting at the same time. Gonna need to practice a bit.

Big inventory compared to the last game. So big it gives me a little bit of glorious attach case vibes.

A mini-cabin defense section right off the bat and then just had to leg it. Moving shelves to block off doors is a nice feature in VR. Also aiming real precise between the cracks in the walls.

Got overwhelmed and ran out of healing. Just tried running for my life, but some giant with a hammer gave me my first death. Kinda reminded me of the big fat executioner dude in 5.

Stopping there for dinner.

That's a hell of an intro. Pretty far cry from Biohazard's beautiful slow burn. Obviously some 4 vibes going into a weird rundown village and getting tossed right into a fight against tens of enemies. It'd probably be no problem with normal controls, but I am not ready for that level of action yet in VR.

Curious if Mia's really dead given her history. Can't wait to hear Chris' excuse for doing that to Ethan. I did find a paper with test results from the BSAA saying that the baby was clean. I guess we'll see.

So the first section of 7 was just a modern day first person RE1 mansion. The first section here is straight up RE4 complete with being saved by the bell.

Came across a normal seeming villager and her papa. Ethan didn't mention to her that I'm a recent widower. Might only have been a couple of hours ago, but someone's gotta help me raise my baby when I get her back.

Wow a whole little community of survivors. I feel like they're about to offer me sidequests or something. Very weird for a RE game.

Nevermind. That didn't last long. Just me and my new wife now moving forward. She can be my Ashley.

What the fuck IS this game? This is so damn out there for a Resident Evil. A whole community of freaks with super powers. Also I knew that big woman was big, but dayum!

Made it to the (what a) mansion. Met the Duke whooooo is also a monster man? Perspective is weird here, especially in VR, but he appears to be ridiculously huge and not just super fat. He actually said "What are ya buyin'?" and said he got that from an old friend, so Merchant lore finally unlocked I guess.

Got captured by Lady D's daughters. Ethan is the most durable man ever with all the abuse he's taken. Lost a chunk of his hand and some digits, got meat hooks in both of his legs, sliced through his hands.

Some cool shit I discovered in VR and have no clue if it's in the base game. For one, you can throw the knife and break stuff. It's surprisingly fun. You can also throw knives at rapid fire. I've yet to test it out in combat. You can also straight up do CQC. Got the knife in one hand, the gun in the other. Fucking sick. And you can just dual wield in general. Was able to hold my shotty and my handgun at the same time. IDK how effective that's going to be unless I get two pistols or TMPs, but pretty awesome that it's doable.

Stopping for the night. Didn't get too far, but very good first day. Combat and controls are still overwhelming me, but it has made for some good and tense escapes with me just running for my life. Game looks great and it's a noticeable improvement with the faces and animations after just replaying 7. I don't know about the whole setting and story though. I absolutely loved the simpleness and return to the franchise roots of 7. This is a super RE4 style of game. Got straight up wolfmen and giants living in castles and shit. It's all cool, but was all this really caused by some biohazard? I accepted Las Plagas obviously, but this is a lot. Very curious to find out more and see where this crazy ass story goes.

Didn't get to play earlier today, but hoping for a few late night hours.

Only new thing to add is that I like how Lady D has to bend over to get through doorways.

Fought and killed the first of the vampire daughters. So any exposure to the outside hurts them or makes the vulnerable? Usually it's just the sun, but that looked more like the wind. I wasted a few extra shotgun shells in the fight as she was in her death animation and I hadn't realized it yet. She sort of crystalized like the Bakers did when they died. Interesting.

I've discovered a stupid strategy that saves on my ammo. It's called punching enemies in the face and then stabbing them 20 times. Ethan's unleashing his inner Joe Baker and letting the fists fly. I'm sure I look like a madman outside of VR trying to run circles around stunned enemies and stabbing or slicing them like crazy, but it works well on these weaker enemies. Based on a note I found I'm now thinking these weak enemies are former servants who were sent to the basement and drained of their blood.

Also throwing knives against enemies doesn't seem very effective. It appears to do a little damage, but it doesn't stun them or do anything noteworthy it seems. Much better with the face punch stab method. At least until I save up some extra ammo.

Another daughter downed. Found a note explaining they were experiments with weird blowflies that ate flesh. They were consumed by the flies and then reformed by them, so even if they are all super duper hot, they're just a collection of flies. Also they are weak to the cold. I don't think that applies to Lady D.

Bought some upgrades. Good to see the old RE4 trick works of upgrading your ammo capacity with an empty gun gives you a free full clip. 7 free shells is a lot. Also upgraded the atache case since I'm doing well on money.

Got to the tower with flying enemies, but gonna call it a night.

Unlocked a bayonet for my shotgun that seems to turn it into a sword in VR lol. Was very useful against the flying enemies on the roof.

Killed the final daughter by blowing a hole in the wall with a pipe bomb. I've barely used bombs or mines so far.

Big showdown with Lady D. Went to town on her with my sniper rifle. Only had to use one health drink. And that's the end of the big lady.

I'm surprised she wasn't the main antagonist and appears to be more of the big cheese Mendez, but with a castle and underling bosses like Salazar. She is literally all I saw about this game when it came out and even the marketing on the store page has her front and center. I totally understand why, but shame that's all she wrote.

So we got Heisenberg, the big mess of a monster, a little puppet looking thing and Mother Miranda left. Plus that asshole Chris out there somewhere. Lady D did mention that Rose was their only hope, so maybe she has some antibodies or some shit like Jake Wesker.

Now that I have the controls down more, the gameplay's been a blast. I'd love to replay that opening village fight again.

Holy fucking shit. Just got through the doll house with the giant Eraserhead baby. Doing that in VR might have been the scariest thing I've ever done in a video game. That was nuts.

Need a break after that part. Let's see. Recap.

Forgot to mention Ethan lost a hand AGAIN. His entire gimmick is losing limbs at this point. Can't remember if it was the same hand as Mia cut off at the start of 7. Think it was the opposite. Plus Jack can cut off your foot at the start of that game too, though I didn't experience that first hand.

So baby Rose is dead. But can be brought back to life somehow cause this is a magic world we live in now. Just need to collect 4 jars of her liquified body parts. That is the goal of this game. Beat the bosses and collect your dismembered infant daughter's parts. Remember when the goal was escape a mansion or get out of a police station?

The Duke seems alright. I don't fully trust him, but he's got some charisma to him and he sells good stuff and fair prices. Why can't he buy some big shoes though?

Was nice getting back to the actual village of Resident Evil Village. "Hunted" some animals for meat. Figured it'd be like the fish in 4. I always got that giant one and sold it for a bunch. On my recent playthrough I discovered you can actually get a second giant fish after the del lago fight. Crazy how you can play that game a dozen times and still learn new things about it.

Did not have fucking cooking on my bingo card. That's certainly a new way to offer upgrades. Wonder if Ethan's balls shrunk with all the roids he took at the Baker house.

The doll house was incredible. Taking away all my gear after I finally feel well equipped. A great choice for a change of pace after the big castle section. It kind of reminded me of the escape room stuff in 7. I got stuck for 10 minutes because I didn't know you could interact with the sink. Moving the body parts of the big Mia dummy was also a bit clunky in VR.

The fucking giant baby coming at me in the hallway scared the piss out of me. VR or no, that thing looked incredibly creepy and the baby voice lines made it even more horrible. Really cool little chase and hide bit. I'm glad it wasn't an extended hide and seek deal. Always hate those in games where you are just waiting in a locker for 3 minutes not playing.

The boss fight against the doll was great as well. I never got to see what happened when the time was up, but I got close one time and seeing the dolls all start to shake and freak out really put the pressure on. But I got her and my baby's legs.

The grave outside the house is for a 9 year old with a name ending in A. I'm guessing the woman in black went crazy losing her daughter and used the doll to replace her. Then Mother Miranda did her thing and magic powers.

Crazy fucking game. 2 down. 2 to go.

I don't think Capcom expected the reaction she'd get. They just marketed her so heavily at release because she's the first boss and that way you don't spoil too much. Obviously they leaned into it later, they'd be stupid not to, but it was not purposeful.

Oh right. I forgot to mention the Umbrella logo on the alter. Feel like there was one other place I saw it, thought it was a bit off, so maybe that was a stretch. Regardless, I could see Umbrella having some history here.

Fought a big ass wolf. Found a grenade launcher and used all the rounds it came with on the wolf. Put him down with some pipe bombs after that. Those things seem tough, but I'm in a kill and loot everything I come across mindset right now. The reward money seems worth it.

Okayyyy giant lake monster. What's it gonna be named? "Lel Dago"? Surprised there hasn't been an El Gigante yet. Remember when there was just a random ass Gigante in 5? With a beard? I wonder if 4make will have the ones with the BDSM gear on. Don't tell me either way. Who the hell dressed them up that way anyway? I bet it was Mendez. I can see him having a soft spot for them like pets.

Met the fish man and he made it sound like Miranda views Rose as her baby. Maybe it's a mold thing? Maybe a part of Eveline even survived and spread? Or maybe it's just a relation by the mold?

Chris! Sure would love some answers there big guy. His guys did mention mold. Ethan might be out of his depth on paper, but given everything he's done with the Bakers and now an entire castle full of vampires and a fucking magic mind controlling doll woman I think he's quickly becoming on par with Leon. Never did learn anything about who Ethan was or what his backstory is. He knows his way around firearms. Found a silly book written by Kendo on his bookshelf back at home, so maybe he's been training, but he already knew his way around all the weapons in 7. Hey I guess with 3rd person mode I'm gonna get to see his full face finally. Again, don't tell me either way, but that's something neat.

Fun chase to the windmills. Drained the water and fought fishman. Toughest fight so far since I died about 3 times, but I was also holding back on my best ammo. 3 down. Heisenberg to go.

Speak of the devil. Looks like he wants to try and trick me. Dude really sounds like a smug asshole. Don't like him. Looking forward to killing him.

Huge clean up around the village. Lots of stuff unlocked. Lots of animals murdered. Or hunted. We'll call it hunted. Made every one of the Duke's dishes but one now.

Had to sell my starting handgun for inventory space. I like that you can buy it back fully upgraded. I only really dual wielded my two handguns once, but I'd like to do it again. Have been getting real fancy with my shooting now. Actually pulled off a perfect no look over the shoulder headshot with my shotgun.

Fought the butcher guy with the axe. What a bullet sponge. I feel like I went about that boss fight in the worst way possible. There were all these exploding barrels outside. I'm guessing if I just continued on through the door I unlocked in that room, the fight would have carried over into that area and been a lot easier? We'll see on my replay.

Made it to the stronghold. Feeling like the castle was more of a classic RE with a big house and lots of doors. The dollhouse was more horror with an escape room type gimmick. The fishman was a big chase sequence. Now it feels like this place is gonna be pure action. I mowed down about 2 dozen lycans on my way here.

2am so calling it here. Kinda wanted to get that last piece of Rose, but I'll do that tomorrow and maybe even beat the whole thing.

Yeah, I found it pretty ironic that all the other lords treat Moreau like such a worthless piece of shit because his boss fight was the only one of them to actually kill me multiple times.

It's not as open as RE7, you will get locked out of areas as the story progresses, so you can miss treasures and more importantly cooking ingredients that will give you permanent stat upgrades.

This is greatly alleviated by the fact that the map goes back to the old style RE, marking every single individual room as completed or incomplete.

essentially, make sure you get absolutely every single thing in the castle before completing it. it'll be obvious what completes it though. the majority of it becomes inaccessible afterwards.

Basically every "section" becomes inaccessible after you complete it, meaning the four lords' locations and a few other areas.

Thanks for the heads up everyone. Also wow I did not expect for Lycans to be this tough. Taking like 15 handgun bullets and you're supposed to fight a horde of them.

Forgot to mention I came across Chris' team set up in the church. Not much new info there, but did read a report on a laptop.

Tough as hell fight against all the lycans into a tough as hell fight against MC Hammer. I probably coulda just gave in and used some of my magnum ammo for once. I've yet to fire that bad boy. The cramped space made it very tough, but only died once.

Got my baby's torso and heading back to the alter. Hate Heisenberg's voice. He kinda sounds like the Outrider from Venture Bros or Ted Wassanasong.

Noticed a grave for an "Eva" who was a 10 year old that died in 1919. I can't remember the specifics about the doll lady's daughter, but could be connected.

Also there's this freaking gate in the graveyard I can not for the life of me figure out how to open. It looks like there's half a tombstone for the name "Claud-" something in there. I also remember a grave site at the dollhouse with a broken tombstone. Bet that's the other half, but zero clue how to get it.

Off to put my baby's body back together and have a chat with Heisenberg.

Found another laptop in a cave. Confirms this is all mold like the Bakers, but it's underground of the entire village fucking everyone up. Actually saw a giant bit of mold moving around. Took a couple shots at it, but don't think you can "kill" it. Not about to waste a grenade round trying.

Found the final rare animal so I can now get every food upgrade.

This factory area is rad as hell.

Robo enemies with glowing red weak points. Kind of remind me of the Regenerador s.

Alright that one fight against the two big guys on the catwalks leading up to the fan? That's gonna be hard on the highest difficulty. Hell that was hard now, but I've been a bit of a crack shot with my sniper rifle.

How the fuck do I get past this fan killing me? It has a big red thing, so I imagine shoot it, but as soon as I get even close to the bridge it locks me into a death cutscene.

Really wanted to finish this tonight, but ah well. Gotta get up early tomorrow and still need to work out and clean up. Calling it here.

That's ok, I'll probably just wimp out and use the unlockables like I did with the circular saw and the defense scrolls for RE7 madhouse lol. I have an ingrained need to kill everything I can in these games so that's the biggest issue. I'm even bringing out my knife to take down a couple enemies. Eventually had to run though because there's like 5 of them at once in the next section and even after I killed three, there were still 5 of them so I'm going to assume they just keep respawning for now. Got to the Duke though and it seems resources will get better from here on. Sucks the villagers had to die immediately. I'll say, I've seen a lot of RE8 stuff simply through pop culture osmosis but I've actually never seen these other two lords besides Lady D and Heisenburg.

So the fan thing was a bit of a VR foible. It unequips your gun and turns your camera into the fan like a cutscene. Didn't know you can get your gun back out to shoot before you hit.

I'm guessing these ball puzzles are also VR exclusives? They're pretty good and have nice treasure rewards, but this factory one was a real pain.

Love the red glowing battery enemies, but one that was covered in a bunch of scrap fucked me up good.

Boss fight against the propeller bastard. Good stuff. Though I do feel like all the difficulty comes from being in VR and it being kind of difficult to maneuver around him and the fire. Was basically a bullfight. Pulled out my magnum in the end for the first time all game. Fired a single shot and finished him off. This has happened to me in at least 3 Resident Evil games. I save that bad boy for when it counts and usually it ends the boss fight after wearing them down first. Also my aim has gotten REALLY good which is fun. Went to the shooting range from the main menu and was crushing it.

So Heisenberg has hated Miranda from before I got involved. Wonder what his plan with Rose would really be. Probably bad considering his whole body modification chop shop hobby. Shame. He's the only one not drunk on the koolaid it seems.

So the main virus here is "Cadou" which is related to the mold from 7. Wondering if Cadou is the same, or if it's the source. Maybe a spinoff. A note mentioned Miranda using "megamycete" which could also just be a more official name for mold. It said she could look like anyone or be anyone? He also called her tricky. So my money is Mia was not Mia? It was Miranda disguised as Mia? If so fuck you Chris you asshole. Just say that you roided up prick. Or maybe I'm off base. We'll soon find out.

Ah alright. Thought the way you controlled it by grabbing and rotating it screamed VR gimmick. Guessing you just move it around with the sticks in normal mode. Probably a lot easier.

If Heisenberg is Magneto he should probably be able to kill Ethan super easily right? Magneto could probably kill most anyone in a few seconds just put chunking a big pipe at them hard enough.

Well they give you tons of ammo as Chris, but machine guns are by far my least favorite guns to use in this game. Have to hold it with both hands or else the kickback is crazy. Not shotty? No magnum? Grenade pins are cool.

So this is not the BSAA. I have no clue what the layout is in RE anymore. I just replayed not a hero and I thought Chris was with the BSAA, but working with the new Umbrella. I remember the evil backers were like the Collective or something vague.

It's funny you say that, most people I've seen who play it with a controller say that it's a pretty fun power fantasy after the rest of the game because the machine guns wipe out the lycans like crazy.

So this is not the BSAA. I have no clue what the layout is in RE anymore. I just replayed not a hero and I thought Chris was with the BSAA, but working with the new Umbrella. I remember the evil backers were like the Collective or something vague.

The Connections. Basically a big crime syndicate but with bioweapons.

I'll mark this as spoilers, but I'm like 80-90% sure it's either clarifying stuff you've already heard or minor details that aren't mentioned in game. The Hound Wolf Squad was Chris' unit in BSAA, but he went rogue with them after they covered up the Baker affair.

Uhhh not sure how I feel about that. Was the mold reanimating his corpse? I guess similar to Jack and the Bakers. Which means molds can produce jizz? And procreate like normal humans? IDK man.

Da Duke! Man the Duke is a total bro. Shady as shit, but actively helping me out. He doesn't even know why he is a giant according to him lol. Fine. Keep him a mystery. Just like the merchant. Also shout out to the unsung hero of this entire game, the Duke's horse. That is one powerful animal.

Killed Miranda, saved Rose, turned moldy, died.

And the BSAA are using zombies as soldiers. Great.

Well that was Resident Evil Village. Fantastic game, but not really feeling how that story developed. Ethan being mold for the past 3 years, Rose being killed, dismembered and put back together to recreate Miranda's long dead daughter, Chris being stupid. Ethan got to go out like a hero at the end, but the last hour of the game was easily the weakest to me.

Also I hate the storybook intro and hate these credits and the song. Sure as shit ain't no "Go Tell Aunt Rhody". 7's credits in general are great. This is even trying to rip off RE4's GOAT credits.

Why'd Ethan fall apart at the end, but not her? Was Ethan just dying in general? Kind of assumed destroying the core of the mold would get rid of all of it, including Ethan.

Well I've still got the DLC to do. Might start that tomorrow. Sadly, no VR for that, so time to put away my fancy new headset and controllers.

Really looking forward to replaying this in normal mode or even 3rd person mode.

Mold is able to near perfectly mimic cells. Miranda is able to control it to shapeshift, but Ethan is just a lot more durable than your average Moldy person.

Weirdly, he's more similar to Marguerite than Jack, I think. She uses the same process to create bugs.

Yeah, that's basically it. He was durable, he wasn't invincible, and he'd just taken more of a beating than he could handle.

yeah Ethan being mold felt like a response to people making fun of him reattaching limbs in RE7
