The symbiote is Venom, yeah, but someone it bonds with is also Venom, they get a dual/hivemind thing when they merge.

As for influence it's typically the other way around - the host influences the symbiote and the symbiote learns and grows from its host.

Granted there's also 30+ years of continuity and retcons.

yea see this is what i initially thought, but i realized i havent actually seen that be the case in spider-man media for some time. the suit seems like it's just a possession monster now (outside the comics, since i havent read marvel since WWH)

Yeah outside media typically just picks a personality from a random point in Venom's history and doesn't usually get into the growth and development that lead to that personality.

Comics Venom is bonded with Mary Jane last I checked and was expressing serious guilt over how it and Eddie used to terrorize her, for instance, but you'd never see that anywhere else.

I always thought of it as, you got the symbiote and you got Eddy Brock. Together they are Venom. Eddy Brock plus any other symbiote is not venom. To refer to the symbiote, its easier to just say, the venom symbiote or the carnage symbiote.

It's supposed to be a combination of the two. Like the symbiote hated Peter for rejecting it and Eddie blamed Spider-Man for his failings. And the two together just amplified their hatred of Peter.

But the symbiote has also been shown to be able to control the body of it's host. My favorite depiction of that was in the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon. While Peter was passed out from exhaustion, the symbiote decided to go fight and it was awesome (Peter is unconscious for the entire fight)

yea that cartoon did it great. the symbiote using peters body to joyride was initially mostly all it did, in terms of negative effects. the enhanced aggression and possession aspects didnt come til way later, at least when he got it in the comic

I did beat Spider-Man 2 and I understand that this is what the game presented it is. The game did not accomplish that believably, however, and as it was played out it was just a possession monster bent on conquering earth via alien invasion

Eh I don't agree. It learned from Harry who wanted to be a super hero and to heal the world and this was his attempt to do it and that's how venom typically used to be. Learn from the host but do it in a stupid way. It seemed in line with the character I grew up with

That's fine. I'm just incapable of being told a thing and accepting it when it's not also shown. The game can tell me a bucket of piss is granny's peach tea, but I know what I taste

I feel like the game didn't really know what it wanted to do and mashed up a bunch of Venom concepts and lore which is why it felt so messy.

Not that I'm aware of.

MCU synergy exists in the comics but they seem to very pointedly ignore the weird shit Sony does in their movies.

i didnt like any of them, which is surprising because i like a lot of really bad movies

What would happen if Norman got the suit? Would it be Venom Norman or Venom Green Goblin?

my husband said green goblin got the carnage suit recently
