Still the best Scooby Doo movie.

I just imagine the boardroom meetings at Hanna Barbara "Let's fuck with thes kids but make it kinda awesome at the same time".

All the Scooby movies from around that time were pretty good but Zombie Island really was on a level above them all.

Let me be one to start the campaign of intense dislike of the sequel's attempt at retconning ALL of the supernatural stuff that happened in the first.

Now I know how comic book fans feel when a major thing gets rolled back "because the current writers/creators hated the changes that fans liked."

Oh shit, I forgot it had a sequel. I'm going to continue to forget, willingly.

Honestly, the yearly Scooby Doo movie trend should have ended after Alien Invasion (maybe cyber chase). Most of them just became Cartoon Network filler. Some of the series were pretty good though.

Although it's weird to think the success of what was probably the edgiest animated Scooby Doo media probably lead to the R/PG-13 Live action movie getting toned down.

Imagine how different the timeline would have been if it stayed a Swat Kats movie.

The whole era here of weird direct-to-video Scooby Doo slapped so hard (That's Zombie Island, Witch's Ghost, Alien Invaders and Cyber Chase).

I think it was because at this time the series was basically dead anyways. The last Scooby Doo show before these were like, a decade before, and there just wasn't much Scooby Doo content in the early-mid 90s.

Crazy to think that these 4 direct-to-dvd movies basically brought the whole franchise back to life so well its still going strong.

Cartoon Network reran the original 60's series pretty heavily in the mid-late 90's. I think my little 5 year old sister was a big fan before the movies even came out. It was a hot minute after Pup, but I don't recall it being that dormant. Movie didn't feel like it came out of nowhere, CN would often do weird shit with old stuff they had the license for.

I think the most surprising thing was the actual tone, it could have easily been a bad John K spoof.

The original script was for a Swat Kats movie (or I guess just an episode after looking it up), that's why the ending is the way it was.

GOAT Scooby-Doo movie which has the misfortune of having a garbage tier and, quite frankly, pointless sequel.

I love the movie and it was the best comeback after nearly 10 years of inactivity from the franchise, but I get weirdly annoyed when young'uns say this was the first time the monsters/ghosts were real.

To be fair, red shirt shaggy era isn't exactly the most popular. Though I love ghoul school.

(If there was an actual real monster before then I completely forgot)

The earliest I can think of is The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo.

tbf that's how it was advertised. I think even the tagline was "this time the monsters are real" or something similar.

I think this was the first time the series tried to actually be scary and atmospheric though. Everything before it was excessively camp.

Not only the original series but 13 Ghosts, The New Scooby Doo Movies, and all the Hanna Barbera crossover shows that had Scooby in them. If you watched CN, Scooby Doo was relevant.
