Not at all. Eating rice with your hands is extremely common outside the US and in the US with with many ethnic groups. Particularly, Africans and Indians.

I do, definitely more at home than when I'm at a restaurant though unless it's the type of cuisine where it's expected. Americans eat messier foods with their hands like wings and ribs, so there shouldn't be a problem.

Also, for the people thinking it's cumbersome because of the individual grains, you do realize rice sticks together, right? It's not like dry sand or something.

Even if Japan if you go to an Indian, Pakistani, etc. restaurant most people eat food meant to be eaten with your hands with their hands. I actually think it's weird people would eat hand food with a utensil. And rice meant to be eaten with your hands is not the same as rice meant to be eaten with utensils. Like Japan has onigiri of course, but you also have zongzi from China (though you can use chopsticks if you want to). Not to mention that outside rice basically every culture has food meant to be eaten by hand and stuff like cookies and chips are basically ubiquitous now and are absolutely messy when eaten by hand.

No, it would simply be too difficult for me if the pieces arent together

Funny because I specifically avoid bone-in wings because I hate getting sauce all over my hands lol.

Same with rice. If it's got nori or some other "wrapper" fine but I'm not putting my fingers in an open bowl of rice. Might as well eat cereal with my hands >_>

I would call it unusual since I've never seen it in person before, but it isn't inherently gross.

I eat steak with my hands and that always throws people for a loop, so I'm not going to have any negative opinion on this.
