How the "420" code spread
  • Origin with the "Waldos": The term originated in 1971 with a group of five high school students in San Rafael, California, known as the "Waldos". They would meet at 4:20 p.m. to search for a rumored, abandoned cannabis crop and began using "420" as their code word for marijuana.
  • Connection to the Grateful Dead: The "Waldos" had connections to the Grateful Dead, whose members also lived in the San Rafael area. One of the Waldos became a roadie for the band's bassist, Phil Lesh, which helped introduce the code to the Grateful Dead's inner circle.
  • Spread through "Deadheads": Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the Grateful Dead's fanbase, known as "Deadheads," adopted the term and helped it spread as they toured the country. Backstage, and at shows, "420" became the code for lighting up.

How it gained wider recognition

Despite its presence in the Grateful Dead community, "420" remained a somewhat niche reference during the 1980s. Its "explosion into the mainstream" happened later:

  • Flyers in 1990: A reporter for High Times magazine received a flyer at a Grateful Dead concert in 1990 that explained the history of 420.
  • High Times coverage in 1991: After seeing the flyer, High Times published a story about the origin of "420" in 1991, which helped spread the term to a national and international audience.
