All those PS2(?) games with fps in the 40s is kinda disappointing.

Stop trying to make me buy another gadget I definitely need!

I am pretty sure there is something they could be doing to make that go up in the settings. Basically everything I've seen about this device has consistently said PS2 games can easily hit that 120 even on the lowest model.

I havent done anything to try and optimize performance. Just marveling at how these games just kinda work at all on such a device.

Also, most of the pictures i posted are of games during cutscenes, and they generally hit 60 during actual gameplay. But again Im not at the stage of optimizing and focusing too much on squeezing out performance. Just in awe of the device existing at all

Im guessing the resolution enhancement in the PS2 emulators settings is probably cranked up too high. Try dropping it to 2x the native resolution.

These pictures were taken at 3x resolution.

I only tried with god hand but even at native that game is stuck in the 40s during gameplay. Most other games have cutscenes in that range but then they jump up to 60fps during gameplay. Ill mess around more over the weekend.

Looking at YouTube guides, there's a lot of specific setup stuff to do for every emulator to make it Work optimally, but when you do it works wonders.

Oh cool, I got Xenosaga 3 to work without the weird graphical glitch. Just had to change the resolution scaling and then change it back. Weird.

I think I figured out what is going on. Games that are limited to 30fps cap out at 30fps, but the screen itself is keeping the refresh rate of 60fps. So the Ayn bottom display OS shows the average, or something. God Hand is limited to 30fps, which is why I'm getting that fps display.

Wild Arms 5 is 60fps in towns, dungeons, and battle, so the bottom display shows 60fps. But the world map is limited to 30fps, which makes the bottom display show 43fps or so.

So it's not the system not being able the run the games--some games are just hardcoded to 30fps. Some games probably have 60fps patches, but I think God Hand has all sorts of physics glitches if you try.

one thing i feel like bringing up in this topic is that i'm just catching up on all the various major new devices in this space over this year and man i did not realise how many dual screen ones there have actually been recently lol

after more or less kicking off the trend (or more accurately failing to) with the flip ds a couple of years ago, ayaneo have had three clamshells in the last few months, two of which are dual-screen (the flip 1s ds and the pocket ds). anbernic surprisingly are also only now producing their first one (the rg ds) on the decidedly more budget side after years of producing probably countless game boy/advance/sp/micro clones like the rest of the budget brands. and also onexplayer had a really interesting sort of non-clamshell one recently which i personally think might be their only worthwhile designed handheld in the last few years (considering most of their devices have just been "what if we split this controller in half and inserted a screen double the size in between, who needs ergonomics", it's not really a very high bar lol, but it honestly does look legitimately neat). Also, honestly pretty surprised that onexplayer actually released an android handheld at all, they're usually on the handheld pc side of the fence (to the point that i still think the rog ally might've actually copied one of their designs). (well, it was likely either theirs or one from aokzoe, which notably also released an updated version of their potentially plagiarised model this year)

(main difference between the two ayaneo ones is that the flip series is a pc one, the pocket series is android, though to be honest most of the specs are different even if comparable. both are also way more expensive than the thor lol (the pocket is like double, the flip like triple). the onexsugar is somewhere loosely in between and might honestly be the most expensive android handheld on the market now lol (at least it's unique))

by the way speaking of most expensive, outside of this stuff, i definitely feel obliged to also bring up the gpd win 5, which i noticed is apparently on the verge of release (it's basically shipping now) and an absolute monster that more or less invalidates the specs of everything else on the market... but uhhh, is probably not at all worth it at its price point also many hundreds of dollars above everything else on the market. other gpd devices that still get yearly refreshes (eg. the win 4) remain pretty competitive with other high-end products anyway and hopefully they'll now be due a price drop with its release (probably not but you never know)

overall though as far as the android handheld side is concerned, either the thor or the similarly recently released odin 3 is probably the best device on the market in terms of value right now (the former for obvious form factor reasons, the latter just for having the best specs... which considering its also priced below the pocket and onexsugar is definitely unfortunate for them). but it's definitely a competitive space now

edit: oh yeah unrelated to nerd hardware stuff i've been playing Stories from Sol: The Gun-Dog (the switch version) today. do recommend

I know it's gonna take like a month, but I keep anxiously looking at that "pending shipment" notification.

Unfortunately Rogue Squadron 2 has crazy stutter bc its apparently just a hard game to emulate even on PCs. Something to do with how it (doesnt) compile shaders. There are tweaks to make it work, but so far the things Ive found make the game unstable and it tends to lock up the device. I want to keep messing with settings tho cuz it looks amazing.

I was playing around with the Ambernic RG34XX (the one that looks like a GBA)

cool electronic, but uhh it was advertised as being able to play PS1/N64 generation games and it was struggling hard with those (stuff before that is fine)

i love this thing and the OLED screens also make it a strong contender for a lot of my free time over the Steam Deck/Switch 2.
